The purpose of a storytelling-based internship position at the SHTA is to convey a sense of connection and stewardship around the trail. Through the role, the personal stories of why people give back to the trail through volunteerism are collected through interviews and digital photography—items that are then used in publications, newsletters, fundraising appeals and social media posts.

The reporting intern at the Duluth News Tribune collaborates with other reporters and photographers to cover a variety of local beats including large events, personal stories, breaking news and more. They also attend and readily contribute to weekly newsroom meetings by pitching new stories and demonstrating flexibility in content delivery.

The freelance creative writer at MIA wrote business summaries for small-scale clients, created mystery-themed playwrights, and made decisions about story content and outcome within the guidelines provided by management. Still, within the freelance role, the creative writer also aided in other start-up company efforts, such as research and referral processes.
