Smiling is a language shared by individuals of many different backgrounds and cultures and I am ready to be able to contribute to this communication of happiness through pursuing a career in dentistry! As a student at the University of Rochester majoring in Biology and minoring in Epidemiology on the pre-dental track, I have always dreamed of pursuing a career where I can incorporate creativity, problem solving and scientific thinking all in one. Along my pre-dental journey, I have been exploring the different intersections between dentistry’s background in health care, public health, and molecular and microbiology disciplines. I believe it is important to understand the holistic view of the field and the impact that ethical issues, health predispositions and behaviors that can be related back to certain health conditions in dentistry. As an EMT and a research associate at the emergency department, I have noticed how much of a disparity there is in the level of care that people of different socioeconomic statuses receive. Whether this be at bedside in the emergency department, with a patient at a dental office, or at the front desk of Maple Park Family Campground, I love interaction with others. Although these experiences present different situations, it has allowed me to figure out my adaptability, my curiosities and my contribution to working in a team. Through article review in my courses for my epidemiology minor, I have realized how demographics, health predispositions and risky behaviors can impact oral health care. In addition, I have noticed the ethical dilemmas associated with healthcare and the disparities that are associated with different societal classes. I have gained more perspective on how dentistry relates back to more than just the science and that there are many more aspects that allow dentists to have a holistic view on oral health.Over the summer and through a potential gap year, I would like to explore wet-lab experiences more. I believe that being able to simplify the science behind a patient’s diagnosis is a challenge and that getting more involved in the analytical setting of these different conditions. I am looking forward to taking all of these experiences and be able to apply it to my own approach to patient care in the future as a dentist.
