About Peyton Swanson

Following my graduation from Augustana with a B.A. in biology, I became a graduate student at the Institute for Bioethics and Health Humanities in 2023. During my undergraduate tenure, I established the Medical Humanities Club to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among politicians, physicians, healthcare professionals, and students. My technical experience centers on genomic research, developed by my proficiency in bioinformatics, qPCR, genomic analysis, and basic cell biology techniques.I am deeply invested in genomic research, with a focus on advocating for rural health equity and promoting the inclusion of rural populations in health-related research. My interests intersect at the nexus of bioethics, genomic research, and health policy.Additionally, I am honored to have been selected as a Graduate Archer Fellow and NIH iSPRinG Intern. These experiences have broadened my understanding of health complexities and equipped me with the tools to effect positive change in these domains.

  • National Human Genome Research Institute (Nhgri)
    Ispring Intern
National Human Genome Research Institute (Nhgri) Jun 2024 - Aug 2024
    Bethesda, Md, Us
As an iSPRinG intern at the NHGRI, within the Social and Behavioral Research Branch under Dr. Susan Persky, I enhanced my research skills, familiarized myself with the NIH, and contributed to projects aimed at increasing equitable healthcare in the U.S. I analyzed survey data from mTurk and CloudResearch, dividing participants into rural and urban groups based on USDA's rurality guidelines. I performed a factor analysis to explore similarities in responses about hereditary and environmental factors of diseases and found no significant difference in heritability beliefs between rural and urban populations, despite varying health outcomes. This role provided hands-on mentorship, exposure to genomics research, and the opportunity to present at the NIH Summer Poster Day, deepening my understanding of the NIH and connecting me with fellow genome scientists.
  • The Archer Center
    Graduate Archer Fellow
The Archer Center May 2024 - Aug 2024
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
As a Graduate Archer Fellow, I championed the inclusion of rural populations in health research trials. Guided by principles of equity and accessibility, I worked to bridge gaps between underserved communities and vital healthcare opportunities. Leveraging the Center's resources, I enhanced my leadership skills and deepened my understanding of public policy. I strived to cultivate relationships with future leaders to drive positive change, amplify marginalized voices, and contribute to improved civic engagement and civil society.I am still actively working to promote a bill that aims to require the inclusion of rural populations in government-funded biomedical research.
