As immigrants with limited English efficiency, my parents had no choice but to work minimum wage jobs despite their prior experiences. Before being immigrants to the United States, my family had lived in a refugee camp for over 20 years in Tanzania, where I was born. Life at the refugee camp was never easy, periodically we would go days without having anything to eat or drink. I can only say this witnessing how far I have come. This has significantly shaped my desire to do more and continually influences my daily choices. With the various challenges I went through from a very young age, I have come to realize that being open-minded and unique is a strength I have to embrace dearly. With this in mind, I’ve embarked on my journey of being more and making a difference in the lives of others.I am currently in my third year of university, studying to work in the financial and legal sectors. With my refugee background, I know how important these sectors of work are to my community and those around me. Most people although successful; aren’t knowledgable in these areas, not even whom to seek proper advice. With the desire to serve others, I have chosen these important sectors. I am almost always out doing something I deem impactful. I have volunteered at St. Mary’s Food Bank since 2016, and I’m continually motivated to do more than that. I take pride and inspiration from my humble beginnings, which have taught me to use every opportunity I get in the best interest of those around me. While in school, I have also found ways to make better use of every minute I get. As I pursue my degrees in Accounting and Finance, I have also been working at various companies throughout, with roles ranging from customer service to account manager, working between 25-35 hours a week. I am currently interning at the Salt River Project, where I am exposed to many business sectors. I am directly under the supply data management team at the moment. I also volunteer with a local church during the school year and mentor underserved students in the summer. I am always looking for ways to connect and identify with others, this only adds to the list of reasons why I am who I am. I found it very intriguing how a mass of people can relate in various ways with the littlest interactions. Although I have faced many challenges, my goal is to be able to shed light on the lives of others. I believe that experiences are the greatest tools to learn and become better people, big or small and good or bad, there are lessons to learn from. I am open to meeting and connecting all, thank you!
