Leader, Polymer And Material Science, Corporate R&D
Current
Leader, Engineering Science Department, Corporate R&D
Responsible for 4 large teams adding to 60 scientists and engineers globally with footprint in USA, KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) and India, who are working to develop novel process technolgies to convert feedstock to basic chemicals and plastics with focus on decarbonization and circularity. Major accomplishments of the team include:1. Incubated and developed technology for electrification of crackers that account for almost one-third of the carbon emissions in the industry. This effort culminated in a Joint development agreement between SABIC, BASF and Linde to further develop and commercialize this technology.2. Built a portfolio of programs to enable plastics-to-plastics circular value chain through refinery integration of advanced recycling technology in Americas.3. Built a portfolio of programs focused on lowering the carbon footprint of the basic chemicals, particularly ethylene, through novel catalytic routes that are in various stages of development and commercialization.
Senior Manager, Reaction Engineering & Technology Development, Corporate R&D
Responsible for the reaction engineering team consisting of 16 scientists and engineers with global footprint in USA and KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). The team is chartered with developing novel process technologies for alternative feedstocks for basic chemicals. Major accomplishments include:1. Built a portfolio of programs to convert cost-advantaged feedstock methane to olefins. Of special importance is the program on oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) to ethylene where a breakthrough in reaction engineering and catalysis enabled the team to develop this technology and scale-up to pilot. SABIC developed OCM was benchmarked against technology developed by better funded competitors by independent external reputable parties and judged to be superior.2. Developed and piloted combustion pyrolysis technology to convert methane to acetylene and syngas. Acetylene is used to make chemicals based on Reppe chemistry or hydrogenated to ethylene in a liquid phase hydrogenation technology. Syngas can be comverted to methanol.3. As part of Joint development agreement with Eni, the team worked on the development of short contact time reactors to convert methane to syngas to methanol.4. The team developed and commercialized a novel technology to purify Carbon monoxide stream used for the production of phosgene to debottleneck polycarbonate plants. The technology generated greater than ten million $ annual savings with a less than one year pay-back and received the most prestigious SABIC Year-end award in 2019.
Staff Scientist And Lexan Pilot Plant Manager
Responsible for pilot/semiworks polycarbonate plant staffed by 18 operators and day staff personnel. Also responsible for process development and piloting of novel specialty polycarbonate copolymers. The highlights of the first decade of my career, 2003-2014, include:1. Developed, scaled-up and commercialized four major polycarbonate copolymer platforms including high-heat polycarbonates, siloxanated polycarbonates and polyestercarbonates from pilot plant to commercial production line that generate new revenue streams amounting to several hundred million US$ at a high contribution margin. 2. Developed deep process expertise in phosgene-based interfacial polycarbonate production technology that includes development of specialized reactors/process concepts for production of specialty polycarbonates. Also an inventor of several technologies to make high purity phosgene.
Lean Six Sigma Black Belt
Lead Process Technologist
Responsible for process development and scale-up of specialty polycarbonatesd from pilot to commercial production line. Of special importance is the process development and commercialization of a high-heat polycarbonate platform and a polyestercarbonate.
Process Technologist
As a Process Technologist, my primary responsibility is to scale-up new product platforms from the pilot plant to the commercial production plant. In particular, the job responsibilities include- Process scale-up and optimization of the new product platforms- Total cost out through process innovation- Design and execution of strategic projects to debottleneck plant capacity and improve safety, reliability and sustainability of chemical processes.
