PAUL DEVENISH is an architect, PhD candidate and lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand and former associate with 26’10 south Architects. In his current position he teaches design, theory, construction and material ecologies in the undergraduate architecture programme, coordinates the department's construction stream, and supervises in the master programme. As a practising architect Paul's work is focused on housing, education, healthcare and urban public environments with major projects including the extensions to the Barnato Hall of Residence at Wits, a new wing at the Rahima Moosa Hospital and the design of a chemical science and engineering laboratory building for the University of Johannesburg’s Doornfontein Campus. Paul has examined and taught locally and abroad. In 2017 he co-developed and taught the curriculum for the UJ, GSA’s Unit 16. He has also been involved as a guest critic at the ETH, Zurich and featured as a workshop director and speaker at the annual Escola da Cidade International Seminar 2019 in São Paulo, Brazil.Paul’s research focuses on future city scenarios as systemic manifestations of everyday occurrences and occupations. In the context of segregated cities, urban structures and infrastructures are seen to operate as compartmentalised fabrics that morph and perpetuate ingrained systems of structural inequality. Paul is interested in discovering scenarios of occupation that examine and challenge existing infrastructural and urban barriers, that offer alternative ways in which these forms can be reimagined to provide opportunities for growth, interface and eco-systemic exchange. By recognising non-binary opportunities within existing binary frameworks, we give new life and meaning to established forms - revealing moments in which the extraordinary is borne of the everyday.
