About Peter George Gordon

Core skills• Synthetic chemistry (air-free techniques, main group and transition metal centres).• Atomic layer deposition and chemical vapor deposition.• Thin film characterization (ellipsometry, resistivity, atomic force microscopy).• Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.• Thermogravimetric analysis techniques.• Solid- and liquid-state NMR spectroscopy characterization.• Facility and personnel management• Technical writing.• Working knowledge of French. My PhD and postdoctoral research concentrated primarily on gas-phase deposition methods, in particular chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). My focus has been twofold: the synthesis and characterization of novel volatile precursors for these processes, and the deposition and characterization of thin films using these and other known precursors. A selection of my published work includes a novel indium precursor used to deposit indium oxide films by CVD, a thorough study of the interference colours produced by ALD-deposited alumina thin films (comparing experimental and simulated data), depositions of thin metallic films with novel silver and gold precursors, and the optical effects of thin gold films deposited by CVD on tilted fiber Bragg gratings inscribed on optical fibers. My master’s thesis focused on liquid and solid-state NMR; I evaluated the liquid-state order of chloride, bromide and iodide room-temperature ionic liquid salts using variable-temperature solid state NMR. Electric field gradient and shielding tensors were calculated with Gaussian and compared to the experimentally obtained values. Please see below for a list of my publications.

The FANSSI is attached to the Carleton University Microfabrication Facility (CUMFF), and a separate research lab dedicated to surface chemistry. We also work closely with Carleton's Nanoimaging Facility (NIF). FANSSI has several tools and services that we employ in a for-fee fashion, or as part of ongoing research projects, including: - atomic layer deposition (ALD)- chemical vapour deposition (CVD)- thermal materials' characterization- powder x-ray diffraction- scanning electron microscopy(SEM) - transmission electron microscopy (TEM)- elemental analysis (EDX/EDS).
