Masters Student

Stellenbosch

Masters student specialised in bioprocessing (cum laude).Brief summary of research:Aerobic bioconversion of alkanes has significant potential for commercially important products. Depression of the overall volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (KLa) in alkane-aqueous dispersions, compounded by the absence of oxygen in alkanes, positions KLa as pivotal in ensuring that these bioconversions are kinetically, not transport, limited. KLa behavior was quantified in simulated hydrocarbon-based bioprocesses comprising alkane-aqueous dispersions (2-20% v/v) with suspended yeasts (1-10 g/l) at agitation from 450 to 1000 RPM. Simultaneous analysis of interfacial area facilitated definition of the dominant causative factor (interfacial area or KL) underpinning KLa behavior. Mechanisms responsible for changes in the interfacial area and KL were proposed in terms of the complex interaction of the influences of yeast loading, alkane concentration and agitation on resistances to transfer and bubble coalescence and break-up, depending on the prevailing process conditions.
