Facilitator/ Researcher

Asian American & Pacific Islander Health Research Group (Aapihrg)

Asian American & Pacific Islander Health Research Group (AAPIHRG) is a group of San Francisco Bay Area health professionals and UC Berkeley undergraduates/alumni. On this campus where 42% of students are Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) in 2008, there was not a single academic course devoted to the study of health in the AAPI communities. The AAPI Health Research Group was formed in 2008 to fill this void.In Fall 2013, as a researcher, I was really interested in the tobacco smoking pattern and perception of it among Vietnamese college students due to personal reason. With the assistance and mentor of Dr. Candice Wong and the AAPIHRG cohort, I conducted an investigation of “Prevalence and Perceptions of Tobacco Smoking as a Risk Factor for Lung Cancer among the Vietnamese Students at Northern California Universities”. My project was presented at the 24th annual Asian & Pacific Islander Issues Conference at the University of California, Berkeley.I am a facilitator for the class Contemporary AAPI Community Health Issues to help run the class for students to learn more as well as educate myself about the health problems that AAPI are facing. Through this, I have learned a lot about community health and how I want to gear myself toward to in the future as a physician to better serve the people.

Assistant Reseacher

Ucsf

I assist my mentor Dr. Luping Lin in many different projects on uncovering the distinct mechanisms of how human lung tissues acquire resistance to drug-targeted-therapy in non-small-cell-lung-cancer. One of the recent projects that we worked on was the "Mapping the molecular determinants of BRAF oncogene dependence in human lung cancer" which was published on Jan 2014. My main responsibilities in the lab are to conduct experiments, tissue/cell cultures, in vivo drug treatment, generating resistant cancer cell lines, protein extraction/purification, Western blotting, DNA/RNA purification, transformation, cloning, transfection, and others to contribute data to the projects.

Active Caseworker

Suitcase Clinic

The Suitcase Clinic is a humanitarian student organization that has offered free services and supplies to the uninsured, homeless and low-income communities of Berkeley, California and the San Francisco Bay Area since 1989. The Suitcase Clinic strives to promote the health and overall well-being of underserved individuals through service provision, cooperative learning, empowerment, and collective action among community and professional volunteers, students, and participants. In the Women's Clinic (one of the three main clinic of Suitcase), I often perform massaging services, foottwashing to our clients while engaging in active listening to their amazing stories and passions in life and future. In doing so, I feel really connected with them, and learned about their situations, where they came from and how hard they are working to improve their lives. Working here not shattered completely my stereotypical views about the world, but also made me more empathetic, and more mature about people's feeling and suffering.

Vice-President

Minority Association For Pre-Medical Students

Minority Association for Pre-medical Students (MAPS) at University of California, Berkeley was found in 2013 as a chapter of Student National Medical Association (SNMA) to support students at Cal who have the aspiration to become doctors of the future but came from disadvantaged backgrounds. We provide resources for the students through development presentations, community service events, study hours and networking opportunities for students to better develop themselves as competitive candidate for medical school. As a small and newly-found organization, a lot of works needed to be done to expand our help and resources to more students on campus. To me and other founding members of MAPS, minority is not necessary restricted to race, but also refers to socioeconomic background, under-representative communities, sexual orientation, and all the factors that make students feel that they are not part of the mass. To be able to overcome your disadvantages, build up your confidence and success in academics, social life and future goals are the aims of our organization for the members.

Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity

Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity creates physicians of integrity with a life-long commitment to our guiding principles of philanthropy, deity, and education though fellowship, service, mentoring, and formal training in leadership, science, and ethics. I took it to heart the motto of our fraternity: "Facta Non Verba - Deeds, Not Words" and I believe that in order to success in life, it's not about what you say that makes who you are, but about what you do, what impacts/contributions have you made to yourself, your family and the community around you that need you the most. I have learned a lot from the brothers and sisters of the CA Iota chapter through studying in pre-medical courses together, volunteering in community philanthropy services events and fundraising for organizations such as Children Miracle Network, participating in development workshops for the members to become the future doctors through understanding their goals, requirements and what skill sets they should accumulate. As webmaster/historian chair, I kept photographic records and maintaining the CA Iota chapter's website in efforts to create a legacy of our chapters for years to come.

Assistant Instructor

Us Kungfu Temple

I followed one of my masters to this school. Master Shi Yanxing is a monk from the famous 1500 years old Songshan Shaolin Temple in China. In the school, I taught Kungfu classes for beginner to advance for young kids. My youngest student ever was as young as 3 years old! I love teaching the forms and skills that I have learned from my master as a way to give back to the younger generations and to promote the culture of Shaolin Kungfu and Chan (Zen in Japanese) to the community. I also participated and led master's and my students to performances and public demonstrations to promote the art of Kungfu and a healthy lifestyle, as well as trained them for competition to show off their talents and skyrocketed their confidence!

Emergency Room Volunteer

Oakland, California, Us

I volunteered in the ER to take care of patients’ and family members’ needs such as getting food orders, offering coffee, blankets, etc as well as actively interacting with patients to make them feel comfortable and facilitating the healing process.I believe that healing is a holistic process and it does not come from just medication treatment alone, but also about how one's feeling as well. So I always tried to smile, and bring positive energy to the patients and their family members in the waiting room in hope of helping them releasing their stress and can focus on getting back to their normal life with a healthy body and mind as fast as possible. I also helped the nurses and doctors to transfer medical supplies to appropriate stations, clean and prepare beds for newly admitted patients and shadowed the doctors whenever I could.

The materials that I had learned previously also became so much more interesting and clearer to me as I explained them to the students. I got a lot of leadership experiences from leading group tutoring as well!
