Trojan Trays Australia is a young manufacturing company looking to consolidate the utility vehicle accessory market. At this new venture, I am responsible for identifying and implementing improvement projects across the business. This requires me to develop and maintain detailed business process maps, project and user requirements, financial models, and data driven metrics to benchmark the business’s performance on a week by week basis. Working closely with the Managing Director, I developed the company’s 12-month business plan, and act as an enabler to the operations and sales team to implement projects that would accelerate growth and profitability. As with any young business, my role in the company requires me to draw and apply a broad set of skills to continually drive business performance. In such a versatile role, I have been fortunate to be exposed to every aspect of the business. To date, I have learnt the importance of putting the customer first above all else, and the necessity for fast and decisive action.

Bespoke Insights is a software company that specializes in the automation of business processes in energy regulation and finance. As a manager at this start-up, I took on many roles, including client engagement and training, gathering user requirements, re-signing of clients, writing project objectives, reviewing technical papers, prototyping user interfaces, product testing, and recruiting, to name a few. Since joining, our team have developed automated software tools for benchmarking, WACC, equity betas, as well as forecasting of risk-free rates and cost of debt. Our clients span the whole of Australia. My experience at Bespoke has taught me the importance of clear leadership, building genuine working relationships with your customers, and how data and technology can empower individuals to do even more.

The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of the World’s leading education providers. I joined UQ as a Lecturer after working for the institution as a finance instructor, and energy/finance researcher. At the University, I was responsible for teaching Managerial Finance, a large cohort subject aimed at non-financial students. We taught the course with an emphasis on practicality, and hands-on learning, and by the end of the course, students were up-skilled to carry out project evaluations, analyse financial statements/annual reports, and understand key concepts in capital structure, portfolio diversification and valuations.While at UQ, I also developed and delivered the financial modelling in excel course for the executive education branch of the business school, and a series of online instructional finance videos. I am extremely passionate about education, and as an educator I always try and bring that passion and energy into the classroom. My experience at UQ has opened my eyes into the profound impact and responsibility that educators bear, and how a small effort on my part can have a drastic positive impact on those I am entrusted to teach and educate.

I worked at KPMG while completing my Masters in Commerce at the University of Queensland. While at the firm, I was responsible for carrying out on-site audits, and identifying opportunities for improvement in business processes. My time at the firm highlighted the importance of having “fresh eyes” on a project, and the key role that open communication plays in client satisfaction.

I joined Newcrest Mining as a graduate, rotating across both their FIFO and residential mine sites, before moving to the Brisbane office to work on the company’s off-shore assets. I was heavily involved in the development of the Cadia East underground gold mine. At the time, it was the largest underground gold mine of its kind in Australia, and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a large group of high performing individuals. During my time there, I was involved in the construction, commissioning, and operational stages of the project, with the latter two occupying most of my time. I drove improvement and reliability projects, as well as the implementation of maintenance programs. The use of data was key to troubleshooting, our decision-making processes, and helped us focus our limited resources to provide the maximum possible impact. My experience at Newcrest has taught me the importance of accountability, the cultural and organisational challenges of implementing change, and the rising role that data, automation, and control systems play in the design and operation of large systems.

I worked at Arup as an undergraduate engineer, dividing my time between the Ecological Sustainable Development (ESD) team and the MEP team. While there, I was heavily involved in the energy modelling of buildings and was responsible for creating simulations that would mimic the heating and cooling profiles of the buildings based on its usage, and location. I was also involved in assisting with reviewing designs for green star and NABER ratings. I was very fortunate in my role, in that I was allowed a lot of flexibility, and was able to gain exposure to a wide range of projects. My mentors and bosses were both brilliant and inspiring, and really opened my eyes to the importance of designing for longevity and sustainability. My experience at Arup has given me a greater appreciation on the impact that buildings have on our society, both from a well-being and sustainability perspective.
