Ph.D in "Adaptive Optics in Electronic speckle pattern Interferometry and Super-resolution".Synopsis:The goal is to apply the wave-front correction to minimize random phase and intensity modulations inherent in the speckle pattern. The wave-front correction is done through LCD Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). Through appropriate feedback to the LCD SLM, the wavefront control is achieved. This adaptive mechanism in the Digital Speckle Pattern Interferometry (DSPI) system has reduced the speckle noise significantly. Another important problem with DSPI is measurement range of deformations dictated by the speckle dimension. We have developed optical superresolution filters and by applying these filters to the speckle field, the speckle dimension along the axial direction increases more than twice with out filters. We termed it as ‘superspeckle’. With superspeckles when DSPI is performed a larger amount of deformation is measured.
Optical Engineer
• Design, alignment and development of optical systems including adaptive optics systems. Alignment includes Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors on-board and obtain the stable configuration when telescope is in motion. • Other responsibilities include inspection of optical components with respect to coatings, dust and opto-mechanical stability. • Interdisciplinary work includes study of effects of turbulence and heated components on the image stability and spot size.• Designing of optical subsystems using Zemax software. Coordination and supervision: The on-board alignment and testing of the systems require careful coordination everyday with other teams like electronics and instrumentation, software and mechanical groups at the observatory (Mauna Kea mountain summit). Supervision is carried out over optical technician and laser engineer.

• Optical design of the space and ground based telescopes for remote sensing and astronomical observations, optical imaging systems and test set-ups for various performance evaluation procedures, after fabrication of the optical components. • CAD modeling of the optical system for checking the feasibility of the mechanical mounts of the payload. • Analysis on the performance degradation due to surface deformation caused by the mechanical mounts (Fitting Zernike polynomials to the surfaces obtained from a structural analysis program). • Straylight analysis and design of the baffles to control the straylight. • Alignment and testing of the optical systems using ZYGO interferometer.Tools used: Code V, Zemax and SYNOPSYS optical design software, AutoCAD and Pro/E CAD modeling software, Matlab, VB.Achievements: • Successful completion of high resolution polar satellite telescope for civilian applications.• Complete design and analysis of 18 channel Sounder telescope for meteorological applications.Consultancy:Optical design of: • Multi-mirror telescope design to Udaipur Solar Observatory, Udaipur, India.• Relay lens system for heat measurement to Institute for Plasma Research, Gandhinagar, India.
