I earned my PhD in Civil Engineering, focusing on Computational Fluid Dynamics from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). My specialization lies in numerical methods in engineering, specifically the stabilization of the Navier-Stokes equations for non-hydrostatic incompressible flows with free surfaces using the finite element method. This model, which is based on GIS-GPU, was developedto simulate floods and tsunamis within other water-related hazard applications(http://www.cimne.com/flootsi). The objective of this project was to develop applicationsand to integrate them with the most advanced computational technologies thatcan obtain flooding “real-time simulations”. These real-time simulations are ascertained byusing efficient algorithms that make an adequate use of the computational resources (memory,caches, etc.) and are programmed to use the modern heterogeneous parallel computingsystems (CPU+GPU). Another main goal is to allow this computational application to beremotely accessible using public cloud service, also known as “Cloud Computing”. In thisway, the final product will have the possibility of being applied to natural disasters relatedwith water, such as simulations that are due to floods, tsunamis, storm surges, dam breaks,harbor resonance, etc. Usually, all of these scenarios generate a high social impact by provokingthe loss of innumerable human lives and huge material damages with high economiccosts and political impact. As a result of this activity,I specialized in the development of numerical methods for a wide range of engineeringproblems such as the development of innovative methods in fluid-structure interaction;non-linear analysis and safety studies of structures; shape optimization in structural andfluid dynamic problems; computational fluid dynamics studies; mesh generation and visualizationinterfaces; program parallelization over shared and distributed memory computingtechniques. Some examples are studies on renewable marine energy devices, the numericalsimulation of offshore wind turbines, Aerodynamic, hydrodynamic and structural coupling.I also worked in the development of a coupling interface to the FAST Wind Turbine CAETool of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This coupling interface hasenabled CIMNE to couple FAST with their Seakeeping tool (SeaFEM) to simulate theoffshore wind turbines and their aeroelastic, structural-dynamic and hydrodynamic interaction.
