About Phi Anh Phan
Aspiring serial inventor and enterpreneur. Having read stories about Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla as a kid, I have been following my dream to become a serial inventor ever since. I later realized that understanding how to turn a good invention into a product that people are willing to pay for and a successful business is the other part of the equation. Hence my interest in entrepreneurship. I chose the path to go through academia to understand how complex technologies are developed from a very early stage. I am now leading my first startup VentDx. At VentDx, we developed and commercialized a bedside lung monitoring technology to help clinicians personalize mechanical ventilation. Currently clinicians still rely on one-size fit all protocols to choose ventilator settings, leading to the risk of ventilators damaging the lungs and currently no universal solution has been widely adopted. Our mission is to make personalized mechanical ventilation a new standard of care for all ventilated patients.More information about VentDx can be found at: https://ventdx.com/ My background is in Physics, Mechatronics, AI, Biomedical Engineering, and Entrepreneurship. CurrentAt VentDx, we developed and commercialized a bedside lung monitoring technology (InspiWaveTM) to help clinicians personalize mechanical ventilation. Currently clinicians still rely on one-size fit all protocols to choose ventilator settings, leading to the risk of ventilators damaging the lungs. Ventilator-induced lung injury is known to have significant impacts on mortality, complications, and healthcare costs, and currently no universal solution has been widely adopted. Our mission is to make personalized mechanical ventilation a new standard of care for all ventilated patients.

“The Inspired Sinewave Technique: a novel technology for the diagnosis and assessment of chronic-obstructive pulmonary disease” is a £1.1m project, funded by the NIHR invention-4-innovation programme, to develop and validate the Inspired Sinewave Technique (the IST) in a group of patients with COPD. In previous projects, we successfully developed the proof-of-concept prototype of the IST device and demonstrated its clinical feasibility in detecting early change of lung function and structure – a sign of early lung disease, in a wide range of subjects, from healthy volunteers, patients with COPD, ventilated patients in ICU, and animal models. In this current project, we focus the development of the technology for COPD. More specifically, we aim to clinically validate the technology in a group of 100 to 150 patients with different severities of COPD by way of comparison to patients’ CT scans. If successful, the IST device will provide clinicians with a new tool for more accurate diagnosis and assessment of patients with COPD, improving both patient outcomes and reducing healthcare cost.
Enterprise Fellow
CurrentI am an awardee of the Enterprise Fellowships scheme at the Royal Academy of Engineering to develop InspiWave lung monitoring technology, and launch the start-up, Intelligent RespiLabs (aka OxRes). The scheme is a part of the Academy's commitment to stimulate excellence and encourage creativity and innovation in engineering by identifying and supporting the founders and leaders of tomorrow's high-tech companies. As part of the fellowship, I am awarded £60,000 to develop the business. Additionally, I am provided extensive training in all aspects of entrepreneurship including business plan development, market research, tax, IP, finance over the course of one year and receive mentoring from the Academy's Fellows. Moreover, as an Enterprise Fellow post the fellowship award, I still receive ongoing support and networking opportunities from the Academy.
Research Fellow (Biomedical Engineering)
Developing a novel medical device, to measure lung functions noninvasively. The device delivers an inspired indicator gas with concentration varied in a sinusoidally pattern, then measures the expired gas at the mouth. The data is then fed into a mathematical model of the lung to work out how well the lung of the tested subject performs.I have helped taking the technology from the lab-bench stage, to clinical feasibility, and am currently working toward spinning it out from the University.Key tasks include:_ manage technical developments, including Matlab models and estimation algorithms, LabVIEW control software, and sensor prototyping._ manage clinical studies._ write grant applications and research publications._ develop business plan.
R&D Engineer
The aim of the project is to develop a novel system to automatically control the inspired oxygen supplied to preterm infants. In existing systems, nurses are required on the bedside to manually adjust the oxygen level. The system would be the first in the world that offers a cost effective upgrade from existing equipments.Key tasks:_ Design the hardware for the first prototype._ Investigate and conduct feasibility study of control algorithms
Mechatronics Engineer
Key tasks:_ Prepared technical documentations and manuals for automation systems developed in FactoryTalk, CitectSCADA, and Cimplicity._ Involved in activities in other areas of the company such as Didactic Training Courses (Schneider Modicon PLC), ABB Robots (S4C+ and IRC), Quality Assurance and OH&S, Process Improvement and Manufacturer Intelligence.
Research Mechatronics Engineer
I designed and developed automation systems for various research projects: Designing and developing an automated testing bed to study the performance of pneumatic actuators, using AutoCAD, Labview, and Matlab. The design and development of a novel medical device to diagnose respiratory diseases, using AutoCAD and Labview.
