Personal StatementSix months into the world, my tiny right hand became a blank canvas for a tattoo of a swastika given to me from my father while stationed at a refugee camp in Thailand. This faded broken-cross at first glance resembles the Nazi symbol that is feared and loathed by most of the population. A closer look would reveal the counter clockwise direction of the bent 90-degree arms to uncover its true connotations. The word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means “good fortune” or “well-being” which I later learned on my own after being harassed by kids but mainly adults. My father passed away at the age of five before we were ever reunited and the only thing I have from him, is this tattoo and a tiny photograph of him. The reason why I share this story is because of the message and meaning behind his peculiar parenting practice. He told my mother, the purpose of this tattoo on my hand was to know who his son is for certain, had we ever crossed paths. This positive attitude and optimism from my father still guides me to view the world in the most positive light and to shine this optimistic luminance on the dimmest experiences.
