CAPACITY & PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENTThis is, and has been the main area of expertise for many years now. Initially at IBM I performed this role on older legacy systems and I was then able to carry on this role within SSE, and now Sopra Steria. So I have been involved in this area for nearly 20 years now. Using a number of tools I have been able to build a view of each of the estates that I’ve managed. Always looking to improve the automation of the data helps keep it as current as possible, when you have an up to date picture of the systems this makes proactive performance management much easier. In this area I use Syncsorts ATHENE suite of tools, LPAR2RRD and EXCEL to provide the necessary data to manage the thousands of servers in the estateThe IBM PSeries virtual estate is where I have the most experience, i also manage Oracle VM farms and Windows systems as well.ITSMMy current role includes the adoption of the ITIL Service Management framework. We are currently implementing Capacity and Demand management into the company ahead of an audit assesment.TEAM MANAGEMENTAs well as the responsibilities above I managed a team of 7 Midrange professionals. This area allowed me to focus on the team management aspects such as Performance Reviews, Time Management and the task rotas that keep the team focusing on the correct areas. I have performed this type role at both IBM and SSE. ADDITIONAL SKILLS SUMMARYAs you can see from the Skills and Endorsements section I have covered a number of IT applications over the years. One of my current areas of attention is Licence Management. Focusing mainly on the IBM catalogue of applications I have been able to significantly reduce overheads which has resulted in large savings for the company. Using the SNOW and ILMT products has improved my knowledge in this field greatly. Having the analytical background of IT Capacity mgt has certainly proven an advantage in this area.ABOUT MEBorn and reside near Portsmouth, Hampshire.Keen follower of football, where I am a player and coach to men and youth teams.Building an interest in the analytical side of the game. Environment Capacity & Demand CoordinatorSopra Steria Nov 2020 - Jul 2022I am currently working on a public sector contract as the Capacity and Demand manager. The responsibilities include the day to day Capacity & Performance management of the IT systems. Managing the demand of current and future requirements and reporting on the findings. We recently architected a new ITIL V3 Service Delivery framework across the business which passed its initial external audit recently. This involved the creation of new policies and processes specifically for the Capacity and Demand disciplines. The systems I manage here include AIX, Linux, Windows and Oracle based environments. -
Capacity Planning & Midrange Bau Team LeaderSse Jan 2018 - 2020Havant - HampshireI was responsible for the capacity & performance role within SSE. I managed a group of 7 Unix professionals in the Midrange team. This involved the day to day management of the team as well as the HR functions required, appraisals, rotas etc. Some recent achievements in this area are:- I project managed and also provided unix & storage support for the decommissioning of 4 IBM PSeries frames. This required the migration of over 300 lpars to alternative locations using new technology (LPM). This was completed without any negative impact to the business. This work resulted in saving of approximately £700,000 in yearly licencing cost to SSE IT.- An external audit identified a short fall in the companies licencing agreement between itself and an external provider. I worked through the details provided and managed to identify areas where the provided data had been incorrectly gathered or interpreted by the auditors. The completed work offset any liability to the company which was estimated to be in the 9 figure plus range !. Processes have been implemented to avoid this happening again in the future. -
Capacity & Performance AnalystSse Jun 2008 - 2020Havant - HampshireMy focus was on a number of areas within the business. The main technical area is the performance and capacity management of the IBM PSeries estate within SSE. This involves continual data analysis as well as daily interactions with people from each of the business sectors.Assisting in the design and delivery of all new projects as well as the ongoing support of the BAU environments are just some of the responsibilities I currently have. The ongoing storage capacity also plays a large part in my role. I approve every increase to UNIX based systems as well as assist the team with the Windows and VMWare estates.Another area of responsibility is the support and management of the IBM TSM backup systems. These cover both the Windows and PSeries/UNIX estates that we have within SSE. This equates to over 2000 servers.SSE Data Management is an area I also cover. This involves the day to day management of the shared storage infrastructure. These are the systems each of the 20,000 + employees use every day, from their home personal drive areas to the business group areas. The monitoring, end user performance, capacity increases and more all fall into my area of responsibilityI have recently designed and implemented a usage based charging process so that internal projects can be accurately billed for their PSeries CPU usage during their lifecycle. This will grow into a key part of any new environment management disciplineTo perform my role I use the industry based tools such as Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes and Microsoft Office. As well as those i specialise in a UNIX performance tool called Athene as well as the application support tools for TSM and SAN based HP storage devices. More info on the systems and applications I use can be found in the Skills section below. -
