My journey started back in Christmas 2019. Losing my brother (brain cancer, and attempted suicide when dealing with the mental stress he went through of knowing what was to come) then my mother 4 weeks later (Vascular Dementia) was a massive blow. I'd been working full time on a national contract and dealing with the care of my mother for the last five years of her life, being the typical male and juggling that 'work/life balance' with an ever-increasing stress level hidden by 'just getting on with it’.During this time, my director was very supportive, guided me through his personal experience of how he'd coped with mental strain from his previous experiences (different situation but the chats guided me). Always calm under pressure, he advised of some mental and physical exercises and to talk through my day when I got home so as not to bottle the emotions up.This led me to start supporting my children’s rugby club (Dartfordians) via the RFU Brave Mind Support Network for Adult Rugby Players. The Brave Mind Charity is about getting into action, working with rugby clubs, universities, and schools to put mental health at the heart of their community. By talking about and supporting each other with mental health the norm. 25% of rugby players, that we know of, experience poor mental health.Brave Mind provides a national platform to act and help rugby clubs and schools to improve their approach to supporting mental health in their community.
