Superintendent, Blue Ridge ParkwayNational Park Service Aug 2005 - Apr 2013Blue Ridge ParkwayResponsible for all aspects of planning and management of operations of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the nation's busiest unit of the National Park System. Developed the Parkway's first general management plan and led the 75th Anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Worked closely with the 29 counties through which the Parkway passes, 11 Congressional Offices, and numerous non-profit partners. The Parkway includes 469 miles of roadway, 1200 miles of boundary, 9 campgrounds and picnic areas, cemeteries, 14 visitor centers, the Moses Cone Estate, concession facilities such as Mabry Mill, the Peaks of Otter Lodge, the Pisgah Inn, and the Folk Art Center. Led a staff of 180 permanent employees, 150 seasonals, and over 1,000 volunteers. -
Deputy SuperintendentGreat Smoky Mountains National Park Oct 1994 - Dec 2005Gatlinburg, TnResponsible for operations and public outreach of the most visited National Park in the U.S. Worked closely with the Park Superintendent on all aspects of operations including working with partners, neighboring communities, local government officials, and members of Congress. Responsible for planning that included four EIS level projects that were highly controversial requiring skill and public meeting management. Allocated resources to ensure best use of declining funds. Worked closely with partners to establish new non-profit organizations to assist the park in managing programs and facilities.
