Application of the full design process within the water & winter safety depts.Milestones included project definition & scoping, customer requirement gathering, research & ideation, prototyping, testing, development, compliance & documentation with senior management providing approval at pre-planned milestones throughout. This included the in house testing dept & production lines which my experience includes:- Accelerated saltwater & UV testing to ascertain an accurate product lifespan & also to modify the design if critical failure became apparent.- Impact testing & compliance- Field visits & maintenanceProduction line work improved my understanding of how design decisions can impact the factory floor & beyond. This also highlighted waste in materials and time that could be improved upon in the design process.I gained in-depth knowledge of injection molding & rotomolding including:- Full process of both methods- Corresponding part design- Tool manufacture & modification- Testing & QC- Supplier Management- Production risk management

Circular Economy Design Researcher

London, England, United Kingdom

A research project investigating the steps required to shift from a linear product to a circular modal involving the adoption of a new design and how a Product-System-Service model may be introduced and utilised. In depth LCA analysis using Granta CES Edupack and SimaPro, highlighted the key areas of energy consumption and throughout the entire product lifecycle providing quantifiable metrics. The redesign of the existing solution required reverse engineering of the design followed by in-depth investigation into alternate fabrication methods that would provide the same level of connection but when required could quickly be released and the materials recovered, in particular the rare earth minerals.Several prototypes were created and tested and many failed before the development of a successful solution was generated. In parallel with the redesign of the physical artifact, Product System Services were investigated and how these scenarios might be applied and deployed in a real world scenario and the potential implications of these scenarios. This involved user research into current consumer behaviour and how design of the system may begin to influence change, highlighting potential transitional steps. The findings of the project contributed to phase one and two of the B&Q power tool share scheme in the UK.A business case highlighting the benefits of the study was presented to senior Kingfisher group representatives and a paper created for submission to the world economic forum in Davos as well as several presentations to senior academics and post graduate students.By improving the ability to recover the material, scoping the services required to deliver the product and greatly reducing the time taken, the viability of a circular economy solution was successfully demonstrated to be a commercially viable and strategic option.

Mobile Minds

Bristol, England, United Kingdom

A start up successfully contracted to work with Vodafone UK with the purpose to improve the health and wellbeing of customers using a connected smart device, cloud integration and a mobile app.The project used the double diamond approach and design thinking methodologies including but not limited to affinity mapping, flow analysis and extreme user interviews.Physical 3d prints were then subjected to real world testing and refined with the ergonomics and usability of the product improved.By opening the discussion to a selection of previously interviewed target audience members and by communicating with this group regularly, greater insight was gained into how to best move forwards with the design of the product. This was also helpful when designing the UX of the product and the refinement of the customer journey map ahead of execution streamlined the design process and allowed for more effective creation of story boards and app wire framing which were then conceptualized and user tested.
