Seoul, South Korea

In this role, I was responsible for Australia's immigration, citizenship and border protection services and programs in South Korea and Japan. Additionally, I worked with the Korean Immigration Service and Japanese Immigration Bureau and Ministry of Justice to build connections between the Australian Government and the South Korean and Japanese governments. This involved initiating cooperation and other agreements with each government and assisting in the development of managed migration programs to help address demographic declines in both South Korea and Japan.

In this role, I was responsible for a disparate set of temporary visas. This included the 600,000+ New Zealand citizens residing in Australia and diplomats, their families and domestic staff. In this role, I worked with:- the Immigration Minister and her office- diplomatic missions throughout Australia- other Australian Government agencies- State and Territory governments- peak community groupsWhile in this role, I initiated a monthly forum for peers to gather and discuss leadership and other workplace dilemmas. This built trust within the group and provided informal avenues for support for other leaders during times of intense work and cultural change. I also mentored 8 graduates at the start of their careers.

I was responsible for policy development and implementation of the Short-Stay Business (subclass 457) visa program: a visa program allowing skilled workers and their dependents to live and work in Australia for up to four years. Managing this highly visible and contentious visa program required tact to manage the many competing interests seeking to influence government policy. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

As Consul (Immigration Integrity), I was responsible for the integrity of the visa caseload to Australia for visa applications lodged in southern Vietnam. I collated, analysed and interpreted data to ensure that those who posed a risk to the integrity of Australia's immigration system were scrutinised closely and, if needed, refused. The role required significant understanding of people smuggling and people trafficking trends through the immigration caseload. The role also required me to speak to audiences on Australia's immigration system on matters including people smuggling, people trafficking, immigration fraud, imposter detection, document examination and data analysis. In this role, I worked with:- the Vietnamese government (national and provincial levels)- airlines- other diplomatic missions in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi- DIAC counterparts in other diplomatic missions in the region- other DIAC offices in Australia.

I had responsibility for the Department's operations in the Northern Territory for:- citizenship services- refugee resettlement services- multicultural affairs- liaison with federal MPs, senators and members of the NT Government- detention review- air and seaport operations- crisis preparation and response- corporate servicesThis position afforded fantastic opportunities to work with local communities to deliver services to people living throughout the Northern Territory in a meaningful and considered way. In reporting across various areas of the organisation, I experienced the challenges of managing competing priorities with limited human resources and capital.

As part of the response to the Palmer and Comrie reviews of Australia's immigration detention programs, I led a 16-person taskforce reviewing cases of inappropriate detention of Australian citizens. I reported cases to the Minister and senior Departmental executive with details of the event and advising options to remedy the situation and change the organisational culture within the department's immigration compliance teams.

During this time, I created the Inter-collegiate Community Service Committee with representatives from other residential colleges of the University of Melbourne, with the aim of expanding the reach of our combined skills, talents and interests and providing an opportunity for students to connect with other students and with the community around Melbourne.
