Phil McDermott is a Pittsburgh native and has lived in the Richmond area since 1997. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and received a BS degree in Chemistry. He started working for General Electric at their Global Research Center in upstate NY and spent a total of 11 years at GE including time at GE Silicones, with GE’s Corporate Audit Staff and 1 year at Toshiba Silicones, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, as the Technology liaison when GE transitioned to majority ownership of Toshiba Silicones. In 1997 he, along with 2 business partners, started Quantum Silicones, located in Chesterfield VA. The business was a true start-up and today has 100,000 ft2 facilities and is now part of CHT USA. Phil was also instrumental in the start-up and continuing growth of ACC Amber Silicones Tianjin, located in Tianjin China. Also now a part of CHT.In 2014 Quantum Silicones was acquired by venture capital and became part of the ICM group with Phil taking responsibility for global technology at sites in the U.S., China, UK, and Italy. The combined business is active in Consumer Care, Industrial Production and Silicone elastomer market segments. Products range includes emulsions, anti-foams, cross-polymer gels, mold releases, automotive elastomers, optical bonding materials, thermal management materials and many custom products developed to specific customer needs. During this time Phil set the direction for the technology team to help facilitate private equity’s sale of the ICM group to CHT GMBH. Phil is currently the CTO for CHT USA with primary responsibilities of innovation leadership, new process & product development and product sustainability. Phil holds 17 US patents, published 2 papers and given talks at several conferences. He has attended William & Mary for MBA coursework. He is a graduate of Stanford’s Graduate School of Business LEAD program. He is also a member of the South Richmond Rotary Club. Phil lives in Chesterfield with his wife and has 4 children.
