Professional life began in the NHS as a nurse, in various general hospital settings. In 1984 a teaching qualification led to 8 years in higher education, finishing as a department head in 1992. An MBA enabled entry to mainstream NHS management - progressing through middle management roles in quality, performance management and strategy development. I secured a significant programme management role, at AD level, to implement the NSF for Older People across the South Essex Health Authority area in 1999, which led to a 1 yr secondment as a County Manager for Older Peoples Services with Essex County Council in 2002. Both roles involved comprehensive work across heaIthand social care. I became an Executive Director at the end of the secondment.
