My aim is to pass on my experience and training skills in the forensic interviewing children and vulnerable adults in accordance with Achieving Best Evidence (ABE). As an Autistic person a significant part of my work now involves effective communication with Autistic people within the justice system. Autistic people represent all roles within the justice system including witnesses, victims, offenders and less obviously criminal justice professionals. Following my Law Degree I completed my MSc in Child Forensic Studies from the University of Leeds. My studies were based at the Dept of Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences within the School of Medicine. My final dissertation involved the use of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis to study the effectiveness of police training in the field of interviewing children and young people with learning disabilities and autism. Autistic people respond better to particular styles of interviewing and communication techniques. Using cognitive interviewing have been shown to be limited in its effectiveness with Autistic people. Overcoming these issues demands an insightful approach that can be taught to individuals whose role includes forensic interviewing. The Youth Justice & Criminal Evidence Act 1999, clearly states that every victim and witness should have a clear voice, and yet failing to interview or communicate in a way that accommodates the autistic condition denies the autistic community from having that voice. The skills I teach will enhance the skills of interviewers who may have occasion to interview autistic suspects, witnesses and victims. I have lectured and provided training on this subject throughout the UK and internationally to police and other law enforcement agencies. My training has also been accredited by the National Autistic Society. Throughout 2021 I was engaged as a lecturer in policing at the University of Central Lancashire lecturing to police officers who were studying within the Police Educational Qualification Framework (PEQF).Specialties: Achieving Best Evidence in Criminal Proceedings.
