I have always had a passion for rugby. I believe the game has huge potential in the USA but that it has to start with America’s youth. As a way of ensuring that my sons were exposed to the game early enough to develop the necessary skills, a friend and I founded a middle school rugby team 13 years ago. One of the fascinating things we see year-after-year is that more often than not, the first rugby game the kids even ever see is the one they are playing in for the first time. As you can imagine with our 5th and 6th grade team, the first couple of games are fairly chaotic. But remarkably, by the State Championship games a mere 7 – 8 weeks later, players have developed great individual skills and emerged into key roles on the team, rugby values such as teamwork and respect have been internalized, and the kids actually play in an attractive and compelling style that all the parents truly enjoy watching. This approach to unleashing latent potential in people is also what drives me in business. With the right inspiration and necessary coaching and involvement, I believe that organizational abilities can emerge, that change can be made inclusive and engaging, and that people can astound you with their capacities in an effort to increase organizational performance. At my clients, my work in organizational effectiveness, talent management, change management and organizational design is founded on this belief. This is my “why”, and is also why I have worked in this field for more than 25 years. Whether you’re interested in discussing rugby, chaotic children or teams, or anything to do with organizational effectiveness, please feel free to link-in, email me or seek me out on the rugby touchline – I’ll be the one yelling the loudest.
