I have been working in HIV and sexual health for nearly six years. Being Black, of African origin, and gay, I’m in three categories that are all disproportionately affected by HIV. It makes it especially important that I take care of my sexual health and is part of why I started working in this field. This is very personal to me. I am incredibly enthusiastic about reducing the health inequalities of people of colour, in particular, improving the sexual and mental health of queer men of colour. I strive for equality at the intersection of race, sexuality, sexual health and mental health, while providing honest, accurate visibility and representation of Black queer men. I work as a health promotion specialist, a researcher, and a writer but above all, I am a social activist.I have strong connections with the Black queer community in London, as I’m part of it and I’m known for conducting outreach in Black queer spaces, distributing information and resources I’ve produced myself. I communicate very openly, and I talk quite candidly about my personal experiences with sex, sexuality, and sexual health. I put myself out there for others like me to relate to me, and I use what I learn to encourage others to take care of their sexual health. I started using my own personal social media accounts to engage queer men of colour about their health. I've helped so many people; motivating them to get tested for HIV and STIs and learn about condoms, and biomedical HIV interventions such as PrEP and HIV treatment and encouraging them to start talking therapy, come out and inadvertently help simply by being myself. I co-developed and appeared in three Me.Him.Us. campaigns for LGBT Hero – specifically targeting, representing and encouraging black men to regularly get tested for STIs and HIV through posters on social media, on digital billboards, in digital advertising hubs, at bus stops and at gay bars and clubs across London.I was featured on the cover of MNEK’s debut album Language and played his love interest in the music video for his most recent solo single Girlfriend. In 2018, I won the Gay Times Honour award for STEM.I am a contributing author in the anthology book Mandem, a collection of essays exploring what it means to be a Black man in contemporary Britain.I have written articles and blogs, I have appeared on TV, film, radio, podcasts, and discussion panels and I have produced and taken part in videos, photoshoots, conferences, surveys, focus groups, workshops, seminars, presentations, lectures and research on race, sexuality, sexual and mental health.
