About Phil Sheppard

Over my career I have built skills as a researcher, innovator, analyst, opportunity broker, writer, networker/co-ordinator, and process manager. The fields in which I excel are technology research and associated business opportunity broking, systems thinking, corporate and public strategy. At Exergyn, which is developing a novel platform technology for heating and cooling, I manage IP, including competitor patent monitoring and analysis and contributing to the quality of Exergyn patents. I also generate technical concepts. I carry out market research and analysis, techno-commercial modelling, contribute to strategy, carry out LCA (using Sphera) and write funding proposals when opportunities arise. At Loughborough University's Centre for Sustainable Manufacturing and Recycling Technologies, I researched technologies, tools and opportunities to improve energy efficiency in food & beverage manufacturing and the system in which it operates. I then focused on design and manufacturing for the circular economy. On a wider stage, I set up a subscription database of clean and cleaner technologies assessed on their scientific and engineering merits, co-founded the UK Biomimetics Network for Industrial Sustainability with Reading & Bath Universities, sits on the BSI 8887 Committee – Design for Manufacture, Assembly, Disassembly and End-of-Life Processing (MADE) (writing the Lifecycle Guidelines Annex) and have been a Judge for the UK Rushlight CleanTech Awards since 2008. I am a trained General Assessor for the Cradle to Cradle Certified(TM) Product Innovation Standard. This sets progressively ambitious environmental standards for certified products and is a major force in eco-design.I am trained in Systematic Innovation/TRIZ, using techniques proven to identify innovation pathways which are often missed by approaches which use only brainstorming. Other key tools are biomimicry, principles of green chemistry, P&L modelling and patent analysis using the Systematic Innovation-based software Patent Inspiration. I am also trained in ethical supply chain auditing under SA8000.Specialties: Science, engineering, sustainability of technology, technology broking, incubation, business planning, venture capital, investment, asset finance, development, poverty reduction, cradle to cradle, standards/verification.
