Emlogis is a company that was bootstrapped by some intelligent thinkers about complex problem-solving. These folks had assembled a brilliant mathematical algorithm that set the foundation for simply enhancing speed and flexibility (easy to write - difficult to deliver). In my time at Emlogis, we needed a strategy to make an already good product into an "Industrial Strength" powerhouse. In addition to the developmental pieces, we assembled a great team, brought a more robust change management process, a scalable DB design and an underlying architecture that was more modular and extensible. We also moved more toward test driven development, a more Agile methodology and modular, quick delivery of enhancements.Killer software development is very tricky and finding passion instead of politics can be even trickier. We definitely had some great days working as a team. It was my great pleasure to work for with a team of bright and capable people with such stellar talent and pedigree. It was one of those gigs and I am better for having been part of it.

Encomia had built some brilliant software to support a great need in the mortgage industry - unfortunately when product was ready for prime time, the mortgage banking market turned to dust. The technology and development team were among the best I have seen. As CIO, there was a need for structure and governance to move from a small dev shop to a mid-size company. As CIO, I focused also on budget, planning, risk management, IT Organizational Structure, staff development and compensation, network and telephony improvements, improved data and network security, redundancy and administration.

Aegis was a top 30 US mortgage lender in A, Alt-A, Alt-B and Sub-prime lending in both the retail and wholesale lending space. Aegis originated $30 billion in loans annually. They closed their doors in 2007 with much of the rest of the industry.Reporting to the Corporate CIO, this was a line-level CIO position. Responsibilities related to owning the relationship with the President of the LoB. For example, collaborating on vision for technology in the business as well as ensuring implementation and support of the existing infrastructure and applications.

As a former Mobius customer in two banks, I was commissioned with the task of helping the company compete in the financial services space against other giants like BMC and IBM. The challenges were mostly around the breadth of the capability of this product along with the price. This positioned Mobius for lengthy sales pipelines with a lot of fall out before the close. Discovering the low hanging fruit (the most significant pain for the prospect that could be most easily cured by solution) and presenting those solutions aggressively would be part of the answer.

Bank United was roughly a $20B thrift in Houston which was acquired by Washington Mutual in 2001. Reporting to the CIO, I was commissioned to build an e-Commerce and non-tradition delivery network. Bank United was transformed from a bank with a brochureware site in 1999, to the number 1 rated e-commerce bank in its respectable peer group in 2001 - according to Morgan-Stanley. By the time of the acquisition, the bank had a multi-lingual, full service and fully interactive retail and commercial web presence, the "EyeTM" - an iris scanning ATM which required no card or PIN (just your eye) as shown on CNN at Prime Time in the fall of 2000. In addition, a very basic call center was extended to a full service contact center with blended inbound and outbound calling, web chat and email by early 2000.

This was a great experience in working as part of multi-national teams (North America, Europe and Australasia) to deliver products and channels that could be reasonably replicated in different geographies, economies and cultures. Later the opportunity to LEAD multi-national teams offered more opportunity for personal and professional growth.

Built and deployed software for Card Issuing, Payments, Commercial Lending and other Lines of Business. This was right before the web became the rage for delivery and client server was the means of delivery. We were becoming better at separating presentation, business rules, and data as more manageable layers. Functionality and usability were improved, as was delivery time and maintainability.

This was my first real gig in application development (in DOS, then eventually Win 3.1 - that's right, just after electricity was invented). A lot of creativity was required because the platforms were limited. Also, integration to old mainframe, green-screen applications was a new growth opportunity. It was the beginning of understanding the integration of enterprise systems and the importance of delivering value to the user - not just cool, shiny objects.
