Cummins & Partners is a full service advertising agency with over 100 staff in three offices.Key Duties:• Wordpress theme development • HTML Email development• Technical consultantI predominantly developed WordPress themes from scratch, using Twig as the template engine (similar to Moustache or Stylus), and SASS/Compass for the CSS (on top of Zurb’s Foundation CSS framework). I used Grunt to drive SASS and javascript assembly, including linting. I also built Wordpress plugins (using PHP).Jira and Confluence were used heavily for project management and documentation, and git is ued for version control.Team Environment:Within the agency I was the sole full time web developer, and technical go-to guy. I build anything from micro websites to large long lived WordPress sites with custom plugins and custom themes. When first employed I was part of a two man team, which then shrunk to a team of one. Whilst I collaborate with several designers, I work autonomously unless the project is large enough to bring in contractors. I work well by myself, managing my priorities and communicating progress and issues to the project managers. I do however prefer to work within a team for its collaborative aspects and richer learning environment.Skills Development:One of the core reasons for my move to C&P was to develop my skills with content management systems. Whilst this has been valuable in terms of WordPress (going from no experience to being very competent), it has been nonexistent with other CMS’s. However, my PHP skills have been significantly enhanced.

Frontend Web Application Developer

Melbourne, Australia

I transitioned from the professional services team at Space-Time Research to the development team, to further my interest in web application development.Duties:• Single page web application front end design and development (javascript coding based around BackboneJS and jQuery, CSS using Less, tests written in Jasmine and Sinon executed with jsTestDriver)• User interface design• Backend API interface design• Running test plans• Cross browser testing• Code reviews• Development planning• Tooling and component selection and evaluationMy main development activity involves the Javascript based front-end for the next generation of our web based data visualisation client tool. I was instrumental in selecting the Javascript frameworks and libraries to use for the UI - Backbone, RequireJS, LESS, Bootstrap, jQuery.Technologies and Tools:Bootstrap was used as the core CSS UI framework, and we made heavy use of Highcharts for charting and data visualisation, and RaphaelJS for some unique custom UI components. We were also exploring D3 and ThreeJS for alternative data visualisation. For the backend of this product we developed a very rich REST API that interfaced to MongoDB and a Java based schema server, which then ultimately talked to our in- house proprietary columnar database server for dimensional analysis queries. We made extensive use of Atlassian tooling, with continuous integration of the entire project handled by Bamboo, code reviews in Crucible, with issue tracking and sprint management in Jira. Confluence was also used very heavily.Unit testing of Javascript was handled by Jasmine and jsTestDriver, though we looked at switching to Karma for the test runner. Feature and integration testing was handled by two full time testers, though we often assisted in exercising the test cases.

Space-Time Research is a leading provider of dimensional analysis software for very large census and survey type datasets.Product Implementation:I have installed, configured, and commissioned the tools on-site both domestically and internationally in government agencies and departments.Product Training:Training is often be conducted at the customers site, with anywhere from one to ten or more people attending.I have trained on all our products - both server side and end user tools.I have also written significant portions of the training guides, contributed to the user manuals, and am comfortable preparing and delivering screen casts.Database Development:Implementation typically involves development of data ETL processes and scripts to take the customers source data (often a transaction capture oriented relational database, or census/survey based) and prepare it for dimensional analysis. This often involves cleansing, denormalisation, fact and dimension identification, and occasionally aggregate cube building.Tender and Work Statement Writing, and Customer Documentation:Involved in numerous tender responses, typically writing the technical and database aspects of the tenders.Written many work statements and work proposals, detailing business needs, risks, success criteria, timelines, costs, personal etc.Have written implementation guide, so that the customer knows what went where, and how it was configured.Software Development:I have written custom ETL processes in Java, including a small Java Swing front-end, and a little Python.

2007 - Nov 2012

Software Developer

Melbourne, Australia

Help desk skills:Frontline help desk support that went from assisting the business unit with day to day software operations to multi day code and data level debugging exercises. Often these would result in the writing of data patches in time critical delivery deadlines. There would often be multiple problems on the go simultaneously, with the need for good multi tasking skills, and the ability to deal with a pressure environment. As a result, I feel I am able to deal with pressure very well, and remain calm, composed and focused when the heat is on.Data Takeon and Migration:Throughout the 9 years I was a key technical person in 2 large data takeons (each taking about 6 months to implement) and several small ones. My role in these migrations was to map the data from external client systems into an internal system, write the programs to exercise the mappings and load the data, write the data validation programs, and design and write data integrity check programs. Business Analysis and System Design:I was the principal analyst and architect of a separate system that was in use by about 30 business personal on a daily basis to perform fund price tolerance checking to market performance benchmarks. When implemented this system saved each person about 4 hours per day, and was considered a critical piece of business software that given them a competitive advantage.Software Development & Design:Throughout this time I was an active developer, both in writing systems that I have designed and in coding based on the designs of others.Database Analysis and Design:The software we developed was very data centric. We had a system with over 300 tables within a relational database schema. As a result, I have an excellent working knowledge of data structure design, normalisation, referential integrity, indexing, SQL, and stored procedures.I am very capable of turning a real world domain analysis into a data structure requirements specification.
