CurrentThe scope of practice for advanced practice providers (APPs) working in a Hip & Knee Arthritis Rapid Access Clinic includes the assessment and management of patients with hip and knee arthritis referred by a primary care provider or physician specialist. The APP conducts a musculoskeletal assessment of the patient presenting with hip or knee arthritis and related conditions, identifies the need and urgency for a consultation with a surgeon and implements a plan to aid management of their arthritis. The APP is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, requesting imaging and other tests as required, and directing referrals onward to orthopaedic surgeons when a consultation is indicated. In addition, the APP can fast-track patients through to a consultation with a surgeon, when indicated, and provides recommendations for referrals to other medical specialists or other health professionals – for example, a dietician or community health services as indicated. The APP provides the patient with education and recommendations to help the patient manage their arthritis and optimize their function.The APP is responsible for following up all patient imaging and other tests requested.
