About Phil Fry

I’ve often heard that information has the power to transform business, but my experience tells me that information is not enough. Information is static. Inert. It must be expertly analyzed, presented clearly and in context, and accompanied by insights that spark creative action to meet defined goals. I’ve seen this point proven time and again in my twenty-five years of consulting for client of all types: from startup to Fortune 5, corporate to nonprofit, manufacturing to high tech. And over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege to partner with innovative and fast-growing consultancies such as Diamond Technology Partners and Slalom, to develop new and better ways to analyze and deliver information that drives results.* Advanced and Predictive Analytics * Strategy & Organization Development * New Venture Launch * Business Case Development * Budgeting & Forecasting * Change Management * Business Process Design & Implementation * Simulation & Visualization * Data Analysis * Business & Financial Analysis * Program Management * Software Selection *

  • Slalom Consulting
    Consultant
    Slalom Consulting Aug 2006 - 2017
    Seattle, Wa, Us
In a highlight of my consulting career, I was invited to be part of the initial 50 experienced consultants to launch the Chicago office of Slalom (then Two Degrees). Over a dozen years I was able to work across fifteen industries, serving as a consultant, guide, and resource to some of the world’s top companies and executives, such as Motorola, Allstate, US Foods, HCSC, and Walgreens, as the office grew from the initial 50 to a 500-person firm at the top of the Chicago market. I am especially proud of my contributions to the Slalom organization itself, especially initiating the first Advanced Analytics Center of Excellence. I led and trained 15 consultants in the early days of this now high-profile field, enabling Slalom to be among the first in Chicago to offer advanced analytics consulting services. I also set the strategic direction and co-led 50+ BI and visualization consultants for the Data Visualization Center of Excellence. My work as a consultant manager included career planning, performance management, and staffing. Both areas were instrumental for a major engagement with US Foods (a Fortune 500 company). developing an Advanced Analytics Roadmap and later a BI Governance Strategy to enable product pricing insights. This helped our client make informed, strategic business strategy decisions for differentiated customer segments. In my first year with Slalom I was honored to receive the Mogul award - Slalom's top consultant award - for exceptional client delivery as a result of my work leading a team of 100+ global developers at Motorola. The team created internal dashboards to enable Motorola's Supply Chain management team to make faster decisions and reduce product delays and parts outages.
  • Digitalone Network
    Cio
    Digitalone Network Aug 2006 - Dec 2008
In an exciting side project, I defined the initial technology architecture, created the hardware and software plan, determined the preliminary IT budget, and hired staff for DigitalONE, a startup venture seeking to provide digital entertainment experiences such as simulcast rock/pop concerts to tweens across the country.
  • Equity Office Properties
    Portfolio Manager
    Equity Office Properties 2005 - 2006
Equity Office Properties, the nation’s largest public owner and manager of office properties, hired me to manage the turnaround of their key project, a $2M custom-developed application with a forecasted annual net return of more than $10M. I led a team of business analysts, developers, and testers to redesign and build the application based on a customer experience review and purchasing process revisions. My contributions to the organization itself included defining the Customer Management and Portfolio Management roles within the IT organization as well as setting departmental priorities and objectives and establish related processes. I also coordinated resources and investment across five simultaneous projects with a $2M annual IT budget.
  • Corporate Systems | Cs Stars | Riskonnect
    Implementation Executive
    Corporate Systems | Cs Stars | Riskonnect 2001 - 2005
I was recruited to the Corporate Systems executive team to add my senior consulting and project management experience, as well as my experience with internal development teams, to direct successful client-site implementations of the company’s risk management software (RMIS). Most notably, at Ahold, an international grocery retailer with hundreds of U.S. locations, I coordinated efforts of multiple teams for the company’s largest software implementation, targeting hundreds of end users across several independent business units. This included defining reporting structures and project governance and coaching client executive staff in driving the change through their organization. I also managed the customization and upgrade of RMIS software across the entire Corporate Systems client base of ~100 organizations. My contributions to the organization itself included the highly rewarding work of mentoring five project managers through completion of PMP certification.
  • Diamond Management & Technology Consultants (Was Diamond Technology Partners)
    Principal Consultant
Diamond Management & Technology Consultants (Was Diamond Technology Partners) 1997 - 2001
    Chicago, Il, Us
In an exciting and professionally satisfying conclusion to my MBA studies, I was recruited by a dynamic young consultancy, Diamond Technology Partners. I was hired to partner with the CIO of $100M major specialty insurance company (IIG) to advise on, select, and implement policy administration and claims management software. Significant projects from my full tenure at Diamond include reorganizing and retraining a 24x5 application support team to enable multi-million-dollar system integration project for global paging services provider (PageNet); creating an IT strategy, product selection, and process definition for new e-commerce venture for an electrical equipment provider (Graybar). I am especially proud of my contributions to the growth and improvement of the consultancy itself—including constructing a cutting-edge corporate valuation method (CFROI) to create a new service offering and defining and implementing a quality assurance process and training QA consultants to establish consistent service delivery—as the firm grew from 50 to over 1500 employees.
  • A.T. Kearney
    Consultant
    A.T. Kearney 1996 - 1996
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
While attending Booth, I spent a fast-paced summer at AT Kearney, one of the first global management consulting firms in the world, leading a sub-team of five client engineers to define manufacturing formulations as part of $4M SAP implementation.
  • Oracle Corporation
    Senior Consultant
    Oracle Corporation 1988 - 1995
    Austin, Texas, Us
As a new college graduate, I joined Oracle Corporation and spent the next several years on consulting engagements as a team leader, project manager, programmer, data warehouse designer, and technology expert. Highlights of those years include directing the development of a custom clinical trials tracking system for $1B, global pharmaceutical company (Eli Lilly); serving as lead architect on a cutting-edge data warehouse for a global CPG firm (Heinz) that enabled real-time business intelligence reporting; and leading a ~10-person team on an engagement with a $100M engineering software company (SDRC) on 2-year CASE development of order entry and fulfillment system. During this time, I was honored to be handpicked by Oracle VP to serve on global Business Process Reengineering team. I capped off my time at Oracle as a lead instructor for a regional Oracle Education Center, an experience that informs my thoughts on how best to convey complex information to this day.
  • Quest Research Corporation | Questech
    Programmer / Engineer
    Quest Research Corporation | Questech 1984 - 1987
My path to analytics and data strategy began at QuesTech, where I spent my breaks from Harvard. At a time before computer graphics were invented, and before data visualization had a name, I used text strings to chart the output of a complex simulation program, allowing the engineers to quickly evaluate the results of their simulations. I could see then how the picture of the program output had so much more power than did a table of numbers.Quest Research Corporation was based in McLean, VA; became QuesTech, Inc.; acquired by CACI in 1998 (http://www.caci.com/about/news/9_17_98_NR.html).
