About Philip Anagnostaras

I write ... most of the day. Writing keeps me out of trouble and off the streets. My favourite is Humour - Germanic / Tutonic / Dark humour. This does not mean I'm not a serious person, but I just can't take myself seriously any more. Why? What happened is I was diagnosed with Bipolar I ("Bipolar one") - it took a long time to get this label - about 55 years. To understand it better: my son Luke is Autistic - I decided one day to go and see his Psychiatrist; seems like the two of us have a lot in common - tall, good-looking, same Psychiatrist, even two of our medications are the same. The main difference is that he goes around laughing at life and annoying the birds; I go around seriously as though sucking lemons, so I think he is a better young man than me (he is 24, I am 58).But back to Bipolar I: I get these ups and downs: in 2013 I had a BIG down (Depression) and in 2014 a BIG up (that is I was Manic) - in manic episodes Bipolar I people get grandiose opinions of themselves, people either love us or REALLY hate us, most of the time we keep them laughing. Anyway, Our psychiatrist has both of us under control using medicine - in my case they control the downs and ups, best is to be just a little up - I get very creative then. Luke? His med.s keep him peaceful and content. So my advice: see a Psychiatrist - it could just solve your problems.

I taught maths mainly to High School students, but also to a number of Primary School learners. My method was to work one-on-one, starting with a thorough assessment and goal-setting which was regularly reviewed. I set homework from appropriate books to ensure lessons were thoroughly cemented in place.

  • Element Six
    Senior Researcher - Contract
    Element Six Jul 2011 - Apr 2013
    Springs, South Africa
I managed an inter-site Project on image analysis of diamond compacts, and found out about Lean Six Sigma. I completed 25-day Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training (50% self-funded, 50% Element Six-funded) and passed exams (BMGI - obtained over 90%) over the period July 2012-April 2013.
  • Element Six
    Senior Researcher - Contract
    Element Six Jun 2010 - Jun 2011
    Springs, South Africa
Element Six re-hired me as a Contractor. I assisted other researchers in the process from extending the inventive and technical content of their patentable ideas, to producing technical drafts for patenting. I produced a full technical specification for a patent of my own, which went to our legal attorney and was ultimately published as a 24-page patent application.

    Script Writer
    N/A May 2009 - May 2010
    Springs, South Africa
I was retrenched from Element Six in April 2009 as a consequence of the global economic crisis, so used successful course material developed in 2008 as the basis for a book manuscript on Financial Independence Training. This was directed mainly at South African School leavers, and was going to be a standard hand-out used in a training business I was planning to start.
  • Element Six
    Principal Research Officer - Permanent
    Element Six Jan 2007 - Apr 2009
    Springs, South Africa
I was placed in a newly-formed section, mainly consisting of recently-recruited researchers, tasked with developing the next generation of materials for Element Six. During this time I successfully completed a modelling project which involved applying concepts from my experience with the ABAQUS Finite Element software package. Specifically I worked closely with a consultant, the output being a software package for predicting material properties from material structures.
  • Element Six
    Principal Research Officer - Permanent
    Element Six Jan 1998 - Dec 2006
    Johannesburg And Springs, South Africa
During this period I pioneered in the areas of Information and Knowledge Management (IM and KM). KM was initiated by me in E6 from an observed need to improve sustainability of know-how in the Business. I noted that core Engineering Competencies were being lost, and only recovered with difficulty or not at all. Initially I developed IM applications using Lotus Notes. This progressed to me heading up a multi-disciplinary Section, and through this Section I brought KM into the company. This evolved into the launch of various Knowledge Management initiatives across the Element Six Group. At all stages a Senior Manager or Executive was directly involved as sponsor. Particular successes were achieved with the Management of Information and Intellectual Property (specifically Patents), which developed explicit Group identities apart from KM. My belief is that sustainable Propagation and Growth of core competencies over time, despite partial or total staff turn-over, is only achievable by the principles and methods of KM.I spent 2004 in a Business Unit helping it to “bed in” KM concepts, mainly via a Patent Pipeline system. 2005 was focused on an Information Management system specification suitable for researchers, and 2006 on HCM (Human Capital Management) aspects of KM.
  • Element Six
    Senior Research Officer - Permanent
    Element Six Jan 1988 - Dec 1997
    Johannesburg Area, South Africa
I worked in the Ultra-High Pressure and Temperature Engineering (HPE) department, with the extremes of pressure and temperature required for ultra-hard products. It was a large team and I acquired considerable engineering know-how. My focus was on mathematical and numerical modelling, but I worked closely with experimentalists, technicians and other theoretically-orientated researchers. I started with Finite Element Analysis (using the ABAQUS software package).I also determined material properties required by other modelling experts, again through valuable interaction with experimentalists and technicians. My final phase in this area was extended time working with a team to develop new designs, and capture knowledge via numerical models and documentation. This is where my realisation for the need for KM began to crystallise.
  • Element Six
    Research Officer - Permanent
    Element Six Apr 1986 - Dec 1987
    Johannesburg Area, South Africa
Joined De Beers Industrial (later Element Six).I spent this period in Diamond Research Lab technical computing department, where I wrote applications for other researchers in a variety of programming languages (mainly FORTRAN, also PL/I) and performed statistical analyses and presentations (using the SAS software). I also developed expertise in the VM/CMS mainframe system, including the REXX script language.I was actively exposed to Company products and processes via mini-projects.
