My mission is to apply microbial genomics equitably to improve public health. Microbial genomics is being increasingly applied to improve public health in high income countries (see routine WGS for surveillance in Europe, North America, etc), but the majority of the burden of infectious disease is in low and middle income countries. Therefore, I think there is a great opportunity to apply microbial genomics more equitably to improve public health. I'm currently trying to put this into practice in Malawi, where I live and work.I'm particularly interested in gut health, and focus on two areas where genomics can impact public health i) vaccine preventable enteric and diarrhoeal diseases and ii) the role of the microbiome in health and disease.
