Project ManagerKeychain Mar 2021 - Oct 2021Tokyo, JapanKeychain is a company whose mission is empowering people with control over their own digital identity. The company's self-sovereign digital identity library - available in C, C++, C#, Java, Python and Swift - enables companies to get started designing secure, private, and scalable solutions to all manner of common problems. Whether it's micropayments, cybersecurity, CBDCs, or full end-to-end encryption, Keychain makes it possible. My role at Keychain ran the full technical gamut, horizontally and vertically. As a freelance consultant with a broad range of skills, I performed the following tasks: Routinely provided feedback to CEO on future product roadmap, features, bugfixes, language-specific idioms, and new products. Designed a blockchain explorer for clients to use for better visualization of the parts of Keychain which reside on UTXO-based blockchains (such as Bitcoin). I wrote the backend in Express, frontend in javascript/Vue, and modified a fork of libbitcoin to give extra information needed by the web server. Set up the CI/CD (continuous integration and deployment) pipelines in Azure for client demos as well as non-core libraries and the libbitcoin server which the blockchain explorer communicated with. Rewrote/cleaned up all existing product demos in Java, C and Python, adding Linux support and location-agnostic build and run scripts to engender a "write once, run anywhere" mentality and make it easier for clients to experience firsthand. Wrote Android Java apps across multiple device types, from IoT and Watch to tablets, to run complicated client POCs involving networks of devices each with their own role. Supported Japanese clients on technical issues and questions, including solutions architecture for future projects. Wrote extensive documentation on all code, project design decisions, tradeoffs, etc. This role continued my experience at Konex, touching many IT facets, and was 70% coding, 30% PM/DevOps/Strategy. -
It LeadKonex.Work Jan 2020 - Nov 2020Tokyo, JapanKonex is a crowd-sourced job board where people are incentivized to help their friends find exciting new jobs. Users can help each other with their resume, introductions to industry professionals, and engage in many other behaviors all of which are indirectly responsible for job placement - and they get rewarded for each step of the way! When I joined Konex, the strategy was in place but there was no CTO, so my job was to take that interim role and get the site up and running. To do it, I performed the below tasks: Using Google Cloud, set up the network/infra and pipelines, alerts, log checks, etc Wrote the web server backend, including all business logic, in Ruby on Rails Wrote the frontend in javascript using Vue/Nuxt frameworks for dual SSR and CSR page components Set up the CI/CD and release scripts on the VMs (shell, perl) and other DevOps processes, branch naming and strategy, etc.The role was a good experience for me, as I was exposed to many IT areas that previously I had worked alongside rather than within, and I got a better understanding of how these teams all interact. It was 80% development (Ruby, javascript, some shell) and 20% DevOps and cloud infrastructure. -
Client Operations DirectorUllink - Now Part Of Broadridge Trading And Connectivity Solutions Jul 2012 - Nov 2019Tokyo, JapanUllink (later Itiviti) is a global FinTech company specializing in software to facilitate all trading flows, including connectivity, middle and back office, risk management, and order/execution management. The flagship product, the Bridge, is a fast, fully customizable routing engine that connects counterparties with brokers and exchanges and lets users implement their own business logic. My role at Ullink was Co-Director of Japan, and my sub-roles were Client Operations Director and Buy Side EMS Product Owner. Tasks included: Managed 4 diverse teams with 15 direct reports, including client-facing and L2/L3 support and project implementation engineers Routinely advised executive leadership members (APAC MD, COO, CEO) on business and functional strategy in Japan, opportunities, and client pain points. During my tenure, all sell-side clients self-reported high satisfaction levels, even those who began with "dissatisfied". Engaged with traders and stakeholders at financial institutions to architect and design large-scale latency-sensitive solutions for their business. As the EMS PO, regularly met with domestic buy-sides to prioritize features, bugfixes and technical debt and receive feedback on POCs Successfully migrated the Buy Side EMS operations/client onboarding process so it could be automated, deployed anywhere with 1 click, and make use of global teams for follow the sun support, saving easily 15-20% of the team's overhead. Wrote numerous productivity tools (both internal and eventually commercial) to assist local and global operations using C#, perl, Python and Java. Fostered education and best practices across all members of my teams, writing detailed documentation for every project as well as FAQs and advanced topic handbooks. -
