I am a Nerd, I voraciously consume, books (fiction), theater, film, television and games. I love learning about science and technology, how things work and how everything relates to each other. I was five when I played my first ever video game. I was at a friend’s house when they asked if I wanted to play on their dads computer and hours went by in a flash as we played “Oh Mummy” together. I didn’t know or care that it was over ten years old, all I knew was that it was fun! Next day I was knocking on my friends door first thing, asking to play more (in hindsight the poor dad probably got very little time on that computer for a couple of weeks) and I have never stopped playing games since.As I grew older all these loves coalesced in into a fascination with storytelling in all its forms and how visuals, audio, writing and subtext can tell or improve stories with much greater freedom than without. I believe this extends to game mechanics and player agency, I still remember the strength of my emotions when Bioshocks “Would you kindly” scene played out which only works as it relates to the players agency, or the time travel level in Titanfall 2 which uses an excellent gameplay mechanic to make one of the best FPS levels I have played in a long time as well as convey multiple stories to the player.I believe video games are an art-form that’s only just finding its feet as most do not use the full potential of the medium and I would love to be some small part of the process of discovering what it can do.Ohh, and Dachshunds are the bestest boys!
