About Philip Cole

I am heavily involved in the physics afforded by linearly polarized photon beams with the CLAS6 detector in Hall B of Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia and BGOOD at ELSA in Bonn, Germany. CLAS6 was decommissioned in May, 2016, but there are plenty of data to still analyze! I played a key role in developing the Coherent Bremsstrahlung Facility (CBF) for producing a beam of linearly-polarized photons in Hall B. I was a cospokesperson on the first three experimental proposals submitted employing the CBF. And, since its inception in the summer of 2001, over a dozen students have received their PhDs using the CBF. I was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship (2014/2015), which will took place at the Physics Institute of the University of Bonn at ELSA (Electron Stretcher Accelerator) ELSA has a high-energy linearly-polarized photon beam facility and the experiment will be complementary to the work I have done at Jefferson Lab.I am active in the 12 GeV upgrade to JLab. I am a cospokesperson on the experiment Nucleon Resonance Studies with CLAS12 (approved Feb. 2009). We have collected data in 2018 and 2019. I am For further details on the underlying physics, see I.G. Aznauryan et al., International Journal of Modern Physics E 22, 6 (2013) arXiv.org: .For the ten years, in collaboration with Dr. Christian Segebade, who has spent 40 years on this matter, I have been pursuing a new area of research for me; namely: photon activation analysis techniques for environmental applications. The basic equipment is an electron linear accelerator (LINAC) with an energy range up to 35 MeV together with a radiation spectroscopy laboratory capable of resolving the gamma lines from the activated nuclides. The current state of knowledge regarding these two interlinking aspects of activating nuclei and analyzing the resulting gamma spectra is sufficiently advanced to allow for both immediate applications in environmental studies and for further research and development in photo-induced cross-section data, which are altogether too sparse in this photon energy regime.I became a member of the GlueX Collaboration in December, 2020. I have recently become deeply interested in searches for light dark matter at BDX@JLab and BDX@Mainz.

The details of my experiments and grants associated with Jefferson Lab are delineated in the pdf of my CV above. I have also mentored several PhD students who have and are conducting their doctoral work on CLAS projects at Jefferson Lab. CLAS stands for the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer, which is located in Hall B of Jefferson Lab, and CEBAF is the acronym for the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. I became a full member of the CLAS Collaboration in 1996. In 2003/2004 I was a Hall-B sabbatical professor.(See: and )

Research Spokesperson on four JLab experiments. Grants -- Presently over $4M (as of 2021)Fulbright Professor (2014)Publications can be found: https://inspirehep.net/authors/1013263I have taught fully across the curriculum including all but one of the graduate courses at ISU.Grad Courses: Classical Mechanics, QM I/II, Math Methods, Nuclear and Particle Physics, and Seminar on Scientific Writing and Presentation. Everything but Grad-level E&M. The same goes for all the undergrad courses. Everything but junior-level E&M, Modern Physics, algebra-based Physics I/II and Math Methods. (I taught College Physics I at UTEP and I teach junior-level E&M, Math Methods, and Modern Physics now at Lamar). As a Research Prof at GWU, I taught grad-level Electronics (twice) + Monte Carlo Methods (twice)University Service Chair of the Faculty Senate (2010/2011 and 2011/2012)Professional ServiceChair of the Accelerator Applications Division of the American Nuclear Society 2010-2011 and 2013-2014)American Association of University Professors, Council Representative for Zone II for 14 States. (2012-2018)General Chair of the International Topical Meeting on the Applications of Accelerators, Québec City, Québec, Canada, (2017) ECT* Space-like and time-like electromagnetic baryonic transitions (2017) See: https://ectstar-legacy.fbk.eu/node/2220 Trento, Italy (2017)In mid 2016, the Physics Department was unfortunately collapsed into a program as part of the PNEE (Physics, Nuclear and Electrical Engineering,) Department. I am a firm believer of maintaining strength in physics through focused research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in physics. There is no strong university without a strong and dedicated physics department. And I retired from this institution in July 2017 and became a *Professor Emeritus* at the ripe old age of 57!I took the great opportunity of becoming Chair of Physics at Lamar University in July 2017.

It was a senior lecturer/research position at the Physics Institute at the University of Bonn. In October 2014 I became a member of the BGOOD collaboration https://bgo-od.physik.uni-bonn.de/ at ELSA (Electron Stretcher Accelerator), which is part of the Physical Institute (Physikalisches Institut). The research is on the nature of the strong force as mediated by the quark subdegrees of freedom in protons and neutrons and how quanta of light interact with these quarks through the types of force particles that are exchanged. I continue to investigate the nature of excited states of protons and nucleons and their subsequent decays using a beam of linearly polarized photons through the technique of coherent bremsstrahlung. The award was to be from September 6, 2014 through January 5, 2015 but I came out two months earlier to work on the project. My baryon spectroscopy research dovetails between JLab and BGOOD. All this is described in the article that appeared in the Innovation News Network. https://edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk/html5/reader/production/default.aspx?pubname=&edid=e3d49584-51a4-4ec2-a99d-98a0800a4de7&pnum=58

    Jlab Sabbatical Professor
    Jefferson Lab May 2003 - Jul 2004

During this time, my duties focused on improving beamline components of Hall B for the Coherent Bremsstrahlung Facility and for the Photon Tagger. I further tested, calibrated, and commissioned a new photon profiler for CLAS.I also performed Monte Carlo simulations for the PrimEx Pair Spectrometer and for designing the scintillator geometry for a new Start Counter for the CLAS time-of-flight system. Much of this work on the beamline led to the success of the second linearly-polarized photon running period g8b, which ran in the summer of 2005. The run was nearly turn-key in that it worked like a charm.

JLab Bridge Appointments are aimed towards stimulating faculty growth in Nuclear Physics at various universities. JLab covered 50% of faculty salary and benefits of this bridge appointment. I held a six-year appointment as JLab-Bridged Assistant Professor funded through the Department of Energy.I was awarded the NSF CAREER AWARD in Nuclear Physics (1999) and Outstanding SPS Advisor in the Nation (2002) in my time there. Also two undergraduate researchers, whom I mentored, were each awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. They both are now associate professors in Manitoba, Canada. I mentored five undergraduate students, in all, who subsequently went on to the earn PhDs in Physics, two of whom are now professors of physics, one is an entrepreneur in computer science, one went on to become a medical professional, and another head of a radiological oncological linac lab.
