Even more purposeful than writing a proposal for a project that will change and save lives, is following up with funders and showing the impact of their support through the development and submission of progress reports. During my short time with the organization, I was able to identify dozens of new sources of funding. I was able to contribute to the establishment of new programming. Working within such a large system required an ability to become a fast learner (from patient safety to chronic disease management to facilities improvement), an even better listener (to effectively capture the ideas of physicians, nurses, other health care professionals, and health care administrators whose primary jobs were saving lives, not writing grants), and an ability to "think outside the box" to form new partnerships, envision new or complementary programming, and work across departments, facilities, and locations to develop competitive proposals.
