Working within such a large system required an ability to become a fast learner (from patient safety to chronic disease management to facilities improvement), an even better listener (to effectively capture the ideas of physicians, nurses, other health care professionals, and health care administrators whose primary jobs were saving lives, not writing grants), and an ability to "think outside the box" to form new partnerships, envision new or complementary programming, and work across departments, facilities, and locations to develop competitive proposals.
