In 1963 I started farming with my uncle on a 550 area farm raising corn, wheat, hay, cattle and hogs. In 1964, I cut back on wheat and started raising soybeans. In 1966, I cut back on cattle and started raising more pigs. For several years I marketed around 3000 head of market hogs that were all raised outside. In 1974, I built the first partially slated hog finishing building. I planted my first no- till corn and soybeans in1974. In 1975, I got Pseudorabies (PRV) in hogs. I chaired the first PRV national meeting. I also chaired the PRV Control Board, was Chairman of the United States Secretary of Agriculture's Advisory Committee on Foreign Animal and Poultry Diseases Committee and served as President of the United States Animal Heath Association in1989. In 1982, I went on the Farmers National Bank Board. Today the bank is well capitalized and has four locations. In the 1990s I quit farrowing and invested in my nephew's farrowing LLC. Now the LLC has 6 farrowing units. In 1998, my son Todd came back to farm. We started to contract finishing pigs on the home farm. In 2003, I built a new finishing hog barn and in 2015 we built another finishing barn. In 2004, I helped organize and start the Inter-American Group for the Eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease in South Americas. There has been no reported case of Foot and Mouth disease in over three years in South America.
