I set up RSR Total Solutions (“RSR TS”) in December 2005 to supply specific needs for achieving energy efficiency within the supermarket and food industries across the UK. Having worked in this sector for the last 20 years, it was becoming very clear to me that the end-users were looking for the complete package, a total solution for the implementation of refurbishing stores on a 5- to 7-year roll-out basis.The company offers a turnkey package of mechanical and electrical services incorporating Building Energy Management Systems’ control strategies with energy optimisation, and renewable technologies including solar and geo-thermal.RSR TS created an energy-saving specification for a leading Retail Food Outlet business in the UK, which, once rolled out, enabled refurbished stores to achieve energy savings of up to 35% within 3 years. RSR TS is currently working on renewable sources of energy, utilising reclaimed heat sources and including solar and geo-thermal options.RSR TS proposals are calculated with capital expenditure to be fully recuperated within a 3 year period.CASE STUDY Food Processing Plants, UK: We installed a centrally controlled Building Energy Management System, incorporating energy and temperature management systems, to show the 24- hour, due-diligence data needed to comply with UK health and safety legislation at our client’s chain of processing plants across the UK. This data could be analysed remotely via the client’s virtual private network and also via a secure IP internet protocol address. We then analysed the data in order to develop and implement strategies for energy management. We also provided energy management services to measure and calculate the energy usage of each department. Outcomes: Energy reduction on a typical site ranged from 10% p.a. with paybacks in one year or less. However, the more extensive projects were geared over a payback of 3 years, with the client achieving up to 35% energy savings over that period.

NCS Cumbria Ltd was set up in 2000 to provide refrigeration control strategies to the retail refrigeration sector in the UK. Clients included Marks & Spencers, ASDA, Somerfield, and Wm Morrison Supermarkets .We recognised at the time (1999) that refrigeration control was very basic and not keeping up with the recent developments in the internet and World Wide Web. So we developed a refrigeration controls system that enabled users to remotely view and control their refrigeration plant over the internet. Our development partners were Resource Data Management, a Scottish firm that was pioneering Internet Protocol equipment which could be installed via Cat5 structured cabling, and Marks & Spencers, who loved the concept and trialled it on three of their sites.The trials were extremely successful and we were engaged as Marks & Spencers' systems provider.
