I am a geologist imparting my understanding of how the Earth works to public audiences. After grad school I was an educator at the U.S. Military Academy and Fairleigh Dickinson University (see details). I developed and taught terrain analysis, astronomy-astronautics, physical geography (USMA), Earth and environmental sciences (FDU), continued learning and writing (see bibliography). Post-doc at Rice University and Honorary Research Fellow at University College London. Joined the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to help evaluate geological hazards at U.S. nuclear facilities and proposed sites for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) facilities. I acted as section leader, acting branch chief, On-site representative at Yucca Mtn. project office, Las Vegas, NV (2-yr assignment), and senior geologist. I represented NRC at HLW meetings in Japan and China and visited their respective underground research facilities (Tono Mine; Gobi desert). Responsibe for site evaluations in WA-Hanford for a nuclear power plant, potential HLW and uranium mill-tailing sites resulted in reports on capable fault, seismic hazards and safety evaluations. I've retained Lic. Geol. status for WA. GE Test Reactor case study, a test-reactor near an active fault in CA, was a trial-by-fire. I defended conclusions of NRC's team, and advised our attorney on points of tectonics for cross examination of the licensee's experts. A book was written about this case (Meehan, R.L., 1984, The Atom and the Fault: MIT Press).

Trustee & Director Of Explorations!Self-Employed 2010 - PresentRockville Science Center, Johns Hopkins Univ., Montgomery Co. Campus, Md 20850Contributing ideas (and acting on some of them) to growing a Science Center without walls into a community center for science and technology in public spaces. Developed field trips to: LEED buildings, NIH labs, pharmaceutical research labs and manufacturing plant, geology walk at Great Falls of Potomac (I lead this one), Chesapeake Bay Foundation's hands-on oyster & crab fishing & water quality cruise, County horticultue & gardening farm, award-winning storm-water and stream protection projects...more in the works. Developing ideas for physics playgrounds and miniature golf courses, oral history of science and technology pioneers in the MD/DC area, on-line clearinghouse for scitech activities in region open to public, identifying speakers for our Science Cafes. Demonstrate to kids of all ages and their parents how geologists contribute to understanding how the Earth works using rocks, fossils, sediment samples from local creeks and relief globe for plate tectonics. Guidebook to geology of Great Falls of Potomac and Mather Gorge in preparation.

Associate ProfessorFairleigh Dickinson University 1970 - 1980Helped start a brand-new program leading to B.S. degree in Geology. Responsible for teaching and student research in hardrock and structural geology: taught Physical Geology, Mineralogy and Crystallography, Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Structural Geology, Geomorphology; co-taught Environmental Geology. Also taught Field Geology Summer Camp at FDU's marine science field station, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Sometime consultant to Mine Hill, NJ community to evaluate potential effects of mining company's plan to develop surface rights for private housing developments. Helped thwart surface-development plans which did not account for surface land subsidence by collapse of extensive (and poorly delineated) underground iron-mines. Correctly identified sources of well water for religious organization located in tight, but fractured, shales along Delaware River, NJ. Participated as research scientist on two oceanographic expeditions: (1) R/V Eastward-Duke vessel dredging seafloor in Anegada Trough Between St. Croix-Puerto Rico; (2) acting chief scientist on Univ. Rhode Island vessel R/V Endeavor dredging mid-Atlantic Ridge basalts from Nova Scotia to Rekyavik, Iceland. -
