Working in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is both challenging and rewarding at the same time. Here at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, our PICU patients range from premature newborns all the way up to 21 year old boys and girls so our knowledge base includes pediatrics and adults. I honed my triage and assessment skills in the Emergency Department for 8+ years before moving on to the PICU where I have been for more than a decade. I have been the Clinical Coordinator / Charge Nurse on the night shift since 2003 with a lot of my time spent at the bedside involved in patient care. We have a great Cardiovascular Surgery Program and look after many complex open heart surgeries. Some of these include HLHS going through BTS and Glenn operations with eventual Fontans, we do Hybrids, Arterial Switch, TOF, ASD/VSD and a range of others. Some complex patients end up on ECMO and I have spent many hours “sitting the pump” as an ECMO Specialist. Driscoll Children’s Hospital also does kidney transplants so those patients come to our PICU. We get patients who need dialysis and although I cannot do hemodialysis, I am well versed in manual peritoneal dialysis and looking after patients on a PD cycler after it’s been set up by Nephrology. I am also a CRRT Specialist and am proficient at priming and using a PrismaFlex machine.We also get respiratory patients, trauma, a lot of DKA, post op Neurosurgical patients and a range of other diseases and conditions. I am a Certified Pediatric Nurse, current in BLS, PALS, ACLS. I was involved in our hospital making standardized paper order sets and then part of the team that assisted our hospital transitioning from paper to electronic charting. We use the EPIC system so I am fluent in that. I have a great family and still enjoy going to work. My life is good… what can I say!!
