I have been fortunate to work for over 30 years in engineering, software and technology consulting firms delivering machines, instruments and devices. I have worked with many highly capable colleagues and in close collaboration with clients to tackle numerous challenging and technical projects, delivering successful new technology solutions in multiple sectors. These projects and people have enabled me to evolve and grow my skills in software while expanding my role into project and programme management, supporting business development and growing others.In my early career as a design engineer, I designed mechanical systems, electronics, and PC / embedded / PLC software for industrial automation and imaging systems, developing fundamental engineering skills to deliver systems. Moving into telecoms, I experienced working with large software teams on fixed price contracts, delivering radio communication systems against complex specifications and communication standards. Here, I established my software craft and started to grow my planning and delivery skills to coordinate small sub-teams. In subsequent years I continued to enjoy an active software and systems role in complex project deliveries while often taking a technical project and programme lead with increasing people management and business roles across some of our largest and longest engagements.While I have had a core strand of life-science / pharmaceutical manufacturing projects, I have also had regular opportunities to work in other sectors including defence, telecommunications, energy, transport and automotive. I have often found that skills and knowledge gained in one sector could be applied and adapted in another. With this experience built throughout my career, it has been a great pleasure to work with several clients over many years and re-visit others, to collaborate further and enhance and evolve systems that we previously delivered; often using increasingly capable software technologies that help to trade complexity and cost in the electro-mechanical solutions.
