About Philip Akoda

As the Founder and CEO of The African Languages Project (AFLANG), I am dedicated to preserving and promoting African languages and cultures through technology-driven solutions. Initially, AFLANG developed phrasebook apps for languages like Ndebele in Southern Africa, Fante in West Africa, and Oromo in Ethiopia, providing essential language resources for tourists and learners. We have since evolved into comprehensive dictionary apps, such as our Efik app with over 14,000 words and our Yorùbá app, boasting an impressive 22,000-word database. Our apps serve languages spoken by millions, enhancing access and learning for these vast communities. For instance, Efik is spoken by over 1,00,000 people, while Yorùbá, one of Africa's most widely spoken languages, has over 40 million speakers globally. The dictionary apps offer a rich suite of linguistic resources: phonemic transcriptions, definitions, contextual examples, native speaker audio pronunciations, synonyms, antonyms, hypernyms, hyponyms, keywords, and dialectal variations. As an author and lexicographer, I have published four books on language and history, which are utilized across various schools in Calabar and are part of the collections of renowned libraries like Oxford and Harvard. Publishing the first Efik pocket dictionary and our digital Efik Dictionary app has been pivotal in advancing language preservation and learning. In our efforts to ensure the highest data quality, AFLANG collaborates with esteemed universities across Africa, including the University of Addis Ababa, University of Ghana, and the University of Zimbabwe. Additionally, I have contributed over 20 Wikipedia pages dedicated to Efik history, people, and culture.AFLANG’s vision is to become the go-to source for African language resources, to build dictionary apps for Africa's leading languages, and to expand our collaborations with universities to maintain data accuracy. Holding a First Class Honors degree in Business Management from the University of Derby, I channel my passion for language and culture into bridging technology with Africa's rich linguistic heritage.
