I work as a GIS Analyst and Project Manager on a large, multidisciplinary on-farm precision agriculture research project. The goal of this project is to develop a framework to site-specifically optimize nitrogen use to maximize producers' net profits while reducing N application in field areas that are historically less productive. We collaborate with six farmers across the wheat growing regions of Montana. Our research is unique, in that it takes place on the field-scale rather than the plot-scale. By harnessing the massive amount of spatial data flowing from farm equipment such as combines and seeders, and characterizing those responses in relation to variables such as historic yield, previously applied fertilizer, topography, and vegetation indexes, we hope to determine drivers of yield and grain protein content, primarily in dryland grain systems. The proliferation of GPS-enabled agriculture technology over the past decade allows us to collect data and provide recommendations on fine spatial scales. Now in it's fourth year, we are able to provide our farmer cooperators with top-dress nitrogen recommendations that will maximize their net returns and reduce the amount of wasted nitrogen often related to uniform rate applications.My primary responsibilities include:1) Managing the flow of spatial data between the producers and the research group2) Experimental design and implementation of nitrogen prescriptions2) QA/QC on gathered farm data, solving data interoperability issues, and conversion from proprietary file formats to common formats3) Design, population, and administration of PostgreSQL/PostGIS relational database4) Development of automated Python processes to clean yield and protein point data5) Vector and raster data aggregation using PostGIS proximity analysis functions6) Processing vegetation indexes and other remote sensing products using Google Earth Engine

The main objective was to determine how current fencing compared to historic fencing, and how fences impacted cultural and natural resources throughout the ranch. To accomplish this, I:1) inventoried all current fence types and locations using GPS 2) digitized historic fence types and locations by researching historic photographs 3) georeferenced historic aerial imagery Deliverables created were:1) spatial database containing current fence types/locations, historic fence types/locations, and georeferenced historic aerial imagery2) report providing recommendations on how to best preserve the historic aspects of ranch fencing by removing certain fences, while maintaining the ability to meet current ranch management goals

I performed an quantitative ecological risk assessment on the proposed biofuel crop, Camelina sativa, by testing its potential to become invasive in response to different disturbances in different habitat types throughout Montana. Data gathered were used to create demographic models to assess potential responses of the plant under various scenarios. The methods I developed can be applied to other proposed plant introductions to determine invasion potential.
