upCYCLE is a Community Interest Company established in June 2020. Inspired by the global Black Lives Matter movement and the adverse affect COVID-19 was having on people from ethnic minority groups, I felt the need to help young people in London by taking unused and second-hand bikes, fixing them up and donating them to charities in Wandsworth, Lambeth and Hackney that specialise in helping ethnically diverse young people. We use a workshop in Brixton to store and fix bikes that have been donated to upCYCLE or bought using funds from our fundraising campaign. We also run bike maintenance and repair courses for young people at the workshop, where they learn how to fix a bike over a 4-week period and get to keep it at the end.
