Philip E. Long, CIO at Yale University for more than ten years, worked in information technology at Yale for forty years facilitating the use of technology in support of academic programs, developing IT infrastructure and building Yale’s IT services. Mr. Long has published articles and delivered numerous professional talks on academic technology in support of teaching, learning and research and building campus infrastructure. He has engaged with multiple professional groups, including eight years of leadership for Bitnet - an early higher education network; ten years of leadership for the Common Solutions Group; participation in multiple vendor academic advisory groups; and long-time participation in the Ivy+ CIO group. Mr. Long was Yale’s lead technologist in the Alliance for Life Long Learning (AllLearn) with Oxford and Stanford, an early online education enterprise, and his team developed Open Yale Courses. Since retiring from Yale as CIO in June of 2011, Mr. Long has or is managing multiple private consulting engagements including:• Strategic planning with officers and trustees at a tuition driven university;• Facilitation of strategic planning at a non-profit research organization;• Engagement with multiple digital arts and humanities projects on behalf of a major foundation, including organization and facilitation of a two day conference;• Development of an IT security strategy with a public university;• IT assessment at a private liberal arts college;• Planning and implementation of a major project at a public university;• IT assessment of a School of Nursing at a major research university; •
