Collections Data Analyst

Current

Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland Museum is putting all its collections online (including the Online Cenotaph). My initial six-month contract was analysing and correcting the non-military data in the museum's two databases. With over 100 years of data to sort through, we concentrated on "quick wins".My second six-month contract focussed on the military records (Cenotaph), cleaning and ingesting WW2 soldiers records. This enhanced 40,000 existing records and added 76,000 new soldiers! The third contract, for 12 months, dealt with 14 data enhancement, cleaning, and standardisation projects. It was with great pleasure at the end of that last contract that I was given the new permanent full-time role of Collections Data Analyst! In the first week of February 2017, I gave a 15 minute presentation to the Collections and Research teams on my new concept "Dataeology" (the information equivalent of archaeology). This was very well received, with comments like "You made data fun!", "Interesting", "Amusing", "I didn't know Excel could be so much fun", "I understood 95% of that!". Following that, I've had many requests for help with Excel projects. In November 2018, I gave a four-hour workshop on "No Programming Required! Data Cleaning for Non-techies" at the National Digital Forum conference in Wellington. We had 19 attendees! Four hours proved to be not long enough, and we had a few technical hitches, but I've had good feedback. I have used the workshop material to create an Intermediate Excel training course at Auckland Museum. As a result of the 2018 workshop, I was invited to Wellington by Te Papa Museum to give two one-day Intermediate Excel workshops to selected staff. Because of the volume of material, I later ran four follow-up Zoom tutorials on Tables, Pivot Tables, and formulas. This job is very important for the overall Collections Online project, is stretching me in good ways, and is a lot of fun!
