The objective of my field work is to aid in the research and quantification of methane emissions from thawing permafrost. Working with Dr. Katey Walter-Anthony on the Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) my duties as a field technician were basely split between field and office work.Field work consists of working in remote locations around Alaska/Arctic and collecting data for later processing. Work conditions are primarily on lakes (frozen and unfrozen) and may include cold temperatures (-30°F/-34°C), hiking (~5 miles) with 30+ lbs of equipment, remote locations (camping out at times for a few weeks), and travel via snow machine or dog team (mushing). The primary data types that I have been collecting utilize tools such as a soil corers, LGR Ultra-Portable Greenhouse Gas Analyzer, Hydrolab, Van-Dorne, augers, chainsaws, etc.. A motto that would best describe problem solving in the field is "If we don't have it, we don't need it"; meaning we have to come up with a solutions on the fly with the tools that we have. Desk work is primarily focused on data input, use of ARCGIS for mapping analysis, and writing VBA for processing results. Design of equipment and logistics for trips is a major portion of this job as well and comes into play when deploying a never before used system in remote locations.
Handler
Mushing is the sport or transport method powered by dogs. As a handler my duties are to train and maintain a healthy team for both recreational and sport use. This means learning how to identify and treat injuries, learn dog nutrition and care, how to train and work with animals, create and complete training runs, how to camp in cold weather, and cold weather survival. While running a dog team you face many obstacles when on the trail alone. These can range from cold weather (-40°F/C), aggressive wildlife (i.e moose), and open water. In the winter of 2018 I trained a 10 dog team for both recreational and sport use. The end goal was to compete in the Percy DeWolfe Memorial mail race (a 200 mile race from Dawson City, Yukon to Eagle, Alaska via the Yukon river), which I completed and took home the Red Lantern. Additional Handler duties include working on the facility (cabin building, kennel building) and general operation and maintenance on equipment (chainsaws, four-wheelers, trucks, sleds, etc.)

The isopach maps were then used to find the average reservoir thickness for each participating lease.
Petroleum Engineering Intern
Perenco's assets in this area of the North Sea are primarily gas wells with low water-cut and condensate production. These platforms were located about 50 - 100 km (31 - 62 miles) offshore in 20 - 60 m water depth and a well depth of about 10,000 ft.During my internship I worked on constructing Prosper models to create Inflow Performance Relationship (IPR) and Vertical Lift Performance (VLP) curves on currently producing wells, predicting initial production of wells being drilled, and the evaluation of potential Electrical Submersible Pumps (ESP) candidates in water logged wells. I built a spreadsheet used for a weekly report on well status. The average daily pressure or production rates of these wells could then be plotted to perform a Decline Curve Analysis (DCA).I also took multiple trips offshore to observe both slickline and coiled tubing operations. While offshore I would also perform Echometer surveys to measure fluid levels in the wells.
Geosciences Intern
Wytch Farm is an oil and gas production and gas processing facility located in the southern coast of England. The entire facility was in the center of a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI), which is essentially the equivalent of a national forest in the U.S.During my internship at Wytch Farm, I was assigned to the Geo-Sciences team where I worked on production data analysis, decline curve analysis, step rate analysis for water stimulation (hydro-fracturing), voidage replacement ratios for multiple multi-compartment reservoirs, and casing integrity evaluations. The team also took time to introduce me to Dynocard evaluations and ESP productivity curves. I made frequent visits to the well-sites with the Well head maintenance where I observed slickline operations, hot oiling, and killing wells. When I shadowed the processing facility maintenance teams I observed valve replacements and gas-turbine maintenance.I spent a day at the Baker Hughes centralift facility in Aberdeen where I learned about the different parts and limitations of ESP's.

During this internship my duties included greasing the stuffing boxes, measuring production and water cut of individual wells, injection analysis of a pilot injector, welding pump-jack (nodding donkeys) stilts, and aided in well workovers. I was also contracted by Tub Drilling Inc. and rough necked on a drilling rig for two weeks. My duties included gathering samples for the Kansas Geological Survey and running pipe.
