Senior Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer (Haematology)National Health Service 1981 - 1988This role involved extensive patient contact and the use of scientific procedures and subsequent analysis to assist in disease diagnosis and treatment, including early work on AIDS diagnosis. My role involved emergency on call work, cross matching blood for emergencies etc. At St Stephens Hospital Chelsea I was one of the team dealing with the IRA Hyde Park Bombing casualties in 1982. At Queen Mary's Hospital Sidcup I gained my Institute Fellowship. This involved a research project studying cell surface structures in Leukaemic patients. This hospital covered the Brands Hatch circuit so saw lots of racing!As a Senior MLSO at Broomfield Hospital, Chelsford. one of my tasks was the implementation of a computerised laboratory information management system. I learned to program in COBOL whilst leading this project which lead me into seeking a position as a medical systems programmer.
