Set strategy and direction for an R&D department of 50 people located at two sites that developed new, profitable Class 1 medical consumer products. Established and successfully managed an annual budget of >$10 MM. Completely retooled the R&D annual HR review process and established an inclusive quarterly strategy meeting to promote the personal development of key staff. Created the R&D Vision Forward grant and opened access to the R&D Fab Lab to enable grass-roots innovation. Proactively established relationships with Essilor Key Account teams to enhance external business relationships by showcasing Essilor R&D’s innovations. Led the project to relocate the R&D team from Florida to Texas and Massachusetts in 2010. Active member of the Essilor of America ECOM. Identified and created a relationship with University of Texas Dallas Mechanical Engineering school by sponsoring Senior Design teams, serving on their Advisory Board, and delivering guest lectures.

Led a multi-functional lab (basic R&D, product development, and process development) for fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). Business manager for the micro fuel cell market segment with responsibilities for evaluating market requirements, setting technical goals, and establishing key customer contacts. Developed and implemented an IP strategy specific to the Fuel Cell Group.

Member of the first-wave team that developed and implemented the roll-out of 3M’s world-wide DFSS initiative. Responsible for the technical content of the DFSS curricula. Chaired the New Product Introduction (NPI) re-engineering team and was the primary architect of the 3M’s NPI gate review. Coached four international DFSS projects and their Black Belts. Wrote/modified multiple (30+) DFSS modules on a wide range of technical topics from Monte Carlo simulations to Disruptive Technologies.

Set technical direction, prioritized projects, and balanced resources for four technology platforms. Coordinated research efforts with three foreign laboratories. Served as key customer contact and technical consultant to Sales & Marketing for hook & loop technologies. Team leader for an out-sourced new product development effort with an off-shore vendor/customer. Member of the Reclosable Fastener business team.

Invented a profitable version of micro-replicated hook for the disposable diaper market. Responsible for next generation product & process improvements that resulted in 100% performance and >3x line speed increases. (10 US patents granted.) Team leader of several hook programs including an initiative that resulted in a 3M Golden Step Award (>$5MM within the 1st year of sales). Recognized as an internal expert on hook making technologies: invited speaker to two corporate events, wrote and taught a chapter of a worldwide class on hook & loop technology. Supervised a 2000 sq. ft. prototyping laboratory from 1995-1999.
