About Philip Wilson

Philip Wilson Director and co-founder of Slipstream Engineering Design Ltd, a dynamic growing team working at the leading edge of RF and Digital Systems. I am a life long engineer with a natural curiosity to take something apart to see how it works, I announced at seven I was going to be an engineer and that set my path out. I have always been interested in wireless technology and radio, becoming a radio amateur while at school. My first job was working on private mobile radio networks, repairs and installations. After completing an electronic degree I was awarded the best final year project and joined Filtronic's where I worked with some amazing people that lead the industry. During my time at Filtronic I met my business partner Mike Roberts, we had a crazy idea about designing a wind turbine, left our paid jobs and set up Slipstream Energy. We started the business in my Dad's garage, expanded the business to larger facilities, employed a team, Designed and Built a 6kW Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, it was neat and we learned a lot. During this exciting time, after all, how many people get to design and build a wind turbine, we set up Slipstream Engineering Design at the time mainly to generate revenues we could re-invest into the wind turbine, it was very much bootstrapping a startup. Slipstream Engineering Design was in demand and our efforts shifted to support the expansions of Slipstream Engineering Design. Without Slipstream Energy and the support that was provided from Family, Friends, innovation funding and businesses willing to support us the stepping stones to Slipstream Engineering Design would never have happened. So we did a lot of work to get Slipstream Energy rolling, our attitude was and still is. If we had to do it, we did it, if we needed to learn it we learned it, if we needed finance we raised it, we did what we could to make it a success.

Senior Hardware And Embedded Firmware Engineer

Embedded firmware and hardware development of world leading Filter and Power Amplifier products.During my time at Filtronic I designed many digital hardware and embedded firmware systems used for base station RF Filtering and Power Amplification. The product were world leading including the first 3G filter system, Digital Predistortion and control of Doherty Power Amplifiers. My main responsibilities in this position included:• Digital hardware design, specification of micro controller systems and embedded firmware.• Key contact for large OEM customers• Translating end user needs into technical specifications• Proactively keeping the customer aware of developments and progress• Management of prototype builds including product documentation, toll gate sign off, planning of timescales, delivery of milestone achievements and budgets.• Presentation of reports on project status with both internal and external business connections.• Managing and mentoring junior members of the design team.My major achievements in this position included:• I joined Filtronic as a graduate. The consistent quality of my work was quickly recognised by senior management; I was promoted in 2003 and then successfully applied for an internal post to transfer into the new Power Amplifier group.• Successful system management of a complex control system design, implementing new technologies and algorithms to support a state of the art Power Amplifier module• Successful completion of third generation filter control circuit international volume manufactured across Filtronic sites.• 3 month secondment to Filtronic Comtek America bringing a third generation product to prototype stage.• Integration of new products into Filtronic Finland production facility

Private Mobile Radio Engineer

Hames Electronic provided private telecommunication solutions. I mainly worked on VHF and UHF bands radio equipment, the work was diverse and I designed systems that was used for communication on large crane systems for shelf picking of products. Radio systems with data modems used with scanners in shipping dispatch environments. I have spent time in freezers used by the UK's largest single-site frozen consolidator, improving wireless links with leaky feeder antennas. Worked with filters made out of beer barrels then installed at Emley Moor Transmitter which is the tallest freestanding structure in the United Kingdom. I once installed radio equipment in a large bank safe. As well as repairing radio equipment, I spent a good portion of time supporting Yorkshire Water with there wireless infrastructure seeing most of Yorkshire during this period, even installing radio equipment in disused cold war bunkers. We worked with lots of different radio equipment supplied from Motorolo, Ericsson, Icom, Repeater Stations where commonly used to increase the range of the radio's a for runner to mobile phones and Tetra system, which I would go onto design equipment for at Filtronics.I left Hames Electronics and started an Electronic Engineering Degree at Hull University as a mature student.
