Transitioning from a senior position in the Navy to an executive position in healthcare was quite a leap, but it is my favorite kind of challenge: being thrown into a completely new position, drawing on all the leadership and management skills I developed over a lifetime, to make a positive difference.When I came into the position, I was truly dismayed at the state of things. The network infrastructure was in a precarious position and the organization was optimized for the 1990s, not the 2010s. I am proud to say the team pulled together and really excelled at bringing Calvert into the 21st century. We replaced the entire access layer, upgraded perimeter security and installed internal segmentation, virtualized nearly all the servers, and upgraded clinical and business applications to modern versions - without breaking the bank. We introduced digital telephone technology, centralized print management, virtual desktops and a host of other technologies. We built a data analytics team to take our operations and care to the next level - all while renovating nearly the entire hospital!The Information Services team at CalvertHealth did a fantastic job of being and managing the change.

Technology had changed enormously in those 20 years, and leading a team of about 40 military, civilian and contract personnel was a blast.Together, we introduced a process by which we could bring up the DoD security compliance of USNA's PCs without interrupting the mission. We went from a very low percentage to over 90% in the course of six months! We also renegotiated the contract supplying about half our workforce, saving the US government $250,000 while putting in some much needed safeguards to ensure we got value for the money we spent. Supporting the mission of teaching our Navy's, and nation's, future leaders felt important to all of us, and the team really moved the needle while I was there. -
Operations Officer, Office Of Naval IntelligenceUs Navy Nov 2012 - Jul 2014Washington, Dc, UsIt was an absolute thrill to serve as the Operations Officer of ONI, managing the daily tasking of a national intelligence organization with a global presence. It was not glamorous, but the name of the game was building and managing relationships throughout the command and its four subordinate commands, as well as with the Pentagon and Congressional intelligence leadership. One example of the work we did was to evaluate the operational cycle of the organization. Moving data and decisions up and down the chain of command took too long. We completely overhauled the decision flow across the organization, reducing the number of hours in weekly meetings by 50%! When factored over the number of people involved, it streamlined the operations of ONI in immeasurably positive ways.Every day was about wringing more efficiency out of an already efficient organization, delivering more with less. No two days were ever the same! -
